PowerPoint Basics / Editing Slide Layout

Subtitles of the Movie

In this module, we focus on slide layout and the reason why we focus on slide layout is because there's a couple different ways to approach your PowerPoint presentations. One is that you can focus on the words that will support your presentation or that will be the presentation and then you can take another pass and kind of arrange those words with SmartArt or with layout the way you want them so that they have a good flow throughout your presentation and within the slides themselves. So it's very important to understand our ability to change any particular slide layout. Also it's important because when we start to add new slides, as you saw earlier, we're going to get a default type of slide which we can then change using the slide layout elements. So on any given slide that you have, you can give it a selection and using one of the buttons here, you can change it to a title and contents slide, a section header slide, a to contents slide and so on and of course your resolution might show a couple more of these potential layouts that you can select. So give it a selection and what's also nice is that you notice that the language or the words or rescaled so that they don't spill off the slide and you don't lose the actual content that's there. So this applies to almost any slide that you select on of course. Also, it will differ depending on the slide themes that you've chosen. Now we've looked in the first module at how to quickly change a slide theme and I'm going to go ahead and do so like that. Now I might get some different look and feel to some of my text and this could make a change to the text as you're seeing, but again, I could go to my slide layouts and quickly experiment with some other options that might fix my situation. It might not. It might make it worse as you can see here that this one, the section header creates, or actually that was a title slide with picture, creates a completely different slide layout than the one we had before. So if you go back here, notice that I'll have to make some adjustments to the text that's on the slide. So that's how you do slide layout and again, remember that the slide layouts that you have available can differ depending on the slide themes that are currently in use in your presentation. And once again, it's worth pointing out that you can do this before or after the fact. As you add new slides to your presentation, and I think we pointed this out in the first module of this chapter, you could make your slide layout apply to just a single slide, applying to new slide or you could insert a new slide and this would let you insert completely different slides with a preset layout like that. So those are your options for editing slide layout.
