Office 2008 Significant Features / Elements Gallery
Subtitles of the Movie
In this first chapter, of course, we're going to take a look at some of the significant features, some of the new and improved features that you'll find when you use Office 2008. Now, if this is your first time with Office, if you're switching over from a previous productivity application, then it's all going to be new of course, so you can consider this entire tutorial new features. So this is specifically targeted towards those users of previous editions of Office, whether it be Office XP or Office 2004. And one of the most noticeable things that you'll see, and you'll see this in Word and Excel and in PowerPoint is something called the elements gallery and this can be toggled on and off with one of the buttons in the toolbar just like that. You could also toggle this on and off just by clicking on each of these elements headers up here. So Document Elements, Quick Tables, Charts, SmartArt, Graphics and WordArt in Word are all of the different elements in the elements gallery and again, if you click on that button or this one up here in the toolbar, you see that you can quickly insert, well, elements into whatever file you're working with. Now, in the case of Word, the Document Elements include Cover Pages, Table of Contents, Headers, Footers and Bibliographies and each of them will change and sometimes, depending upon your resolution, you'll have to scroll back and forth to see some of the different elements that are available. So just for an example here, let's take Cover Pages and if I wanted to quickly add a cover page to this document, all I have to do is expand my element gallery once again, look under my document elements for Cover Pages and then bingo, I inserted a new page, which happens to be a cover page. So now I've got a two-page document, the first of which, again, is a cover page and then there's the original agenda that I had in the file. Let me switch over to PowerPoint. In this PowerPoint presentation here, again, I have Slide Themes, Layouts, Transitions, Table Types, Charts, SmartArt graphics, which we'll deal with separately again, and WordArt. So again, I can give this a click or use my gallery button in the standard toolbar and let's say I wanted to make a sweeping change to the overall look and feel of this presentation. I can scroll through my themes and we'll deal with themes specifically later on, but let's just say from the preselected themes here, I select that one and now it changes the entire theme throughout the presentation. Notice that not only this slide changed, but these other slides changed as well. So that's a look at the gallery that is a significant new feature and if it is getting in the way, if it's taking up too much real estate, because after all, it takes about, well, that's about a fifth maybe, closer to a quarter in this resolution, of the real estate available for the slide, so I always like to pass along early on how to get it out of the way. And it's pretty simple to do. You just give the element header a click and then it kind of shuffles off into the background until you need it again. So why do this? Why give you this innovation? The idea behind the elements gallery is that it puts a lot of the power of the application right at your fingertips so you don't have to go searching around for the way to change the slide layout or the slide theme or to add transitions. All of those things that help you use the program and use the program more powerfully are right there at your fingertips with the gallery.
