Introducing Microsoft Expression Web / Differences Between FrontPage & Expression

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, let's take a look at the differences between FrontPage and Expression Web. FrontPage 2003 is the predecessor for Expression Web. Microsoft took the best of FrontPage and built onto it to add a more streamlined and full web design editing product. Expression Web does not contain the web components that were in FrontPage. Those components were so code heavy things would be slow or have non-standard compliant code. So those components are now provided in a new and easily customized web-based service. For example, you can store and share photographs in multiple sites in Expression Web, but in FrontPage you'd only have a photo gallery and couldn't do that. Web components relied on those proprietary FrontPage server extensions. Expression Web no longer requires that server-side technology such as FrontPage Server. FrontPage also had themes and shared borders. They were nice, but again, they created proprietary code that was not standard compliant. Expression Web now allows us to use CSS, Cascading Style Sheets. We can make dynamic web templates and ASP sites. CSS allows us to keep our site size small and have a consistent look across the entire site. One more thing: Front Page used to have a database interface wizard. It's no longer in Expression Web, but nicely, Expression Web supports ASP.net 2.0. We can now drag and drop those controls to help us connect to and display content from our databases. Overall, Expression Web is a great improvement. It is now code compliant and also web standards compliant. So let's move on and learn more about Expression Web.
