Working With Worksheets / Hide and Unhide

Subtitles of the Movie

The data in columns, rows and sheets can be hidden and then unhidden with Microsoft Excel. For a more concise view of the bills, let's hide each of the individual months so that only the labels, and the total average and percent columns appear next to each other. To hide a column, select the entire column by clicking on its heading, the go to the format menu, to column, to hide. January is now hidden. To hide the rest of the individual months, you can select more than one column by clicking and dragging across many of the buttons. Once again, in the format menu, go to hide. This gives us a much more concise look at the data, with the summary columns appearing right next to the labels. To bring back the hidden columns, go to the format menu, to column, to unhide. Notice this has brought back the last chunk of columns that we hid. But January is still not here. Another way to unhide a column is to go in between the two columns that remain where that column used to be. Notice it goes from B to D. As you rest your pointer on the line between them, you'll notice two different kinds of arrows - one with a slightly parted line and the other with a solid line. The one with the solid line is the auto fit or the resizing arrow. The one with the parted line will actually unhide column C. As I click and hold and drag to the right, column C begins to appear. In a similar way, we could hide this group of rows that represents the individual bills. By clicking and dragging from the 4 to the 10 and then right clicking on any one of these row headings, you can select hide from the shortcut menu. Those rows then disappear so we simply see the month headings and each of their summaries at the bottom. To unhide, once again go to the format menu, this time to row and select unhide. The hidden rows now appear again on the spreadsheet. Entire sheets can also be hidden. In the format menu, under sheet, you'll find a hide command. The bills sheet, since it was the active sheet, is now hidden. To bring it back, once again go to the format menu, to sheet, to unhide. This will bring up a list of any sheets within this workbook that are currently hidden. Since bills is the only hidden sheet, we can make sure that that is selected and then click ok, and it returns to its original position. he only hidden sheet, we can make sure that that is selected and then click ok, and it returns to its original position.
