The Basics / AutoCorrect

Subtitles of the Movie

Excel will fix mistakes for you as you type if they are part of the auto correct list. As I add the labels for total, average and percent, I'll make some mistakes that are covered by auto correct. For instance as I type total, I will make the first two letters capitalised. When I hit my tab key to enter that and move one cell to the right, notice the o has been made lower case. This is so that if you hold that shift key down for a little too long, those kind of mistakes will be corrected for you. Next I'm going to misspell the word average. This is not in the auto correct lists. So note, that the word stays exactly the way I typed it. In the next cell I want to put the label the percent of paycheck. First of all I'm going to misspell the word the, by putting in T E H. As soon as I hit a spacebar, that changes to the word "the". Next I'm going to put percents of, as all one word with out a space between. Once again as soon as I hit the spacebar it separates the two words. The word average is still misspelled. There is a place where you can go to see the list of types of errors that auto correct will fix for you, and also to add errors in that it may not be fixing. To see the list, go to the tools menu, to auto correct. There are many features that are checked off at the top including the one I showed you for correcting two initial capitals as you type. If you're typing in sentences, the first letter will always be capitalised for you, and names of the days of the week will always become capitalised. Because we have the check mark in replace text as you type, we saw things like the word "the" become corrected. The list of actual words is at the bottom and you can scroll through this list to see what entries have already been placed here. We wish to add a new entry for average - A V R A G E. As I type, that word or misspelled word goes into the replace area. In the width area you'll want to add the text the way it should be spelled or the way you want it to be replaced with. Once you have double-checked that in the replace box is the way that the word you typically use is misspelled, and in the width box the way you want it to be replaced. Click the add button, this word, its misspelling and correct spelling are added to the auto correct list. To test this we'll click ok, delete the original label, and once again type the word incorrectly. As soon as you hit space or enter, the new spelling is now replaced. If there is an entry in auto correct that you wish to delete, once again go to the tools menu to auto correct, locate that entry in the list. Select that entry once you've located it, and then click the delete button at the bottom of the list. Click ok and we'll test to see if this entry has really been removed. I'll misspell the word and hit enter, and now it leaves the word at its original spelling. try has really been removed. I'll misspell the word and hit enter, and now it leaves the word at its original spelling.
