The Basics / Undo and Redo

Subtitles of the Movie

When you've made a change to a spreadsheet that you no longer need, you can use the undo command to get rid of several changes in a row. And then to bring those changes back a redo command is also available. I'll make some changes to the current spreadsheet and then show you how those changes can be undone using the undo button. For instance, I'll select all three cells next to cable by clicking and dragging, and delete those values. And then I'll make some changes to my electric bill values making them all for instance, 100. I can also add formatting, for instance by selecting and clicking the bold button on the toolbar, I can make all of my labels bold. These are just an example of a few of the kinds of commands that the undo command can undo on the spreadsheet. There's a button for undo on the toolbar, it looks like a blue arrow doing a u-turn to the left. By clicking on the button itself, it will go back an undo the very last command that you executed. In this case it's made our labels down the left side go back to being normal text. If I click undo again, it will undo the bold from the labels across the top. And as I continue to click on undo, it will undo in reverse order each change I've made to the spreadsheet. The down-pointing triangle button just to the right of the undo button gives you a list of all of the different commands that you've completed. If I click down the list for instance, on the last clear that's there, I can bring back or undo several of those changes at once. As you can see even the information that I pasted from the previous exercise comes back onto the spreadsheet. These commands can also be located in the edit menu. By clicking on the word edit, you'll see undo paste, up at the top. As I click on that, only one can be undone at any given time. To get to the redo command from the edit menu: click on the word edit; go all the way to the bottom to expand the menu; and then select the redo paste button. As you can see, the value that was last undone, comes back on the spreadsheet. There is also a button for redo, but like in the menus you have to go to the arrow buttons to make it appear. Here's the redo button, and as I click on this it will redo all of those command that I just undid. As soon as I select the button from this extra buttons area once, it will now appear on the main area of the toolbar. So I can continue to click redo, or I can click on the history or down-pointing triangle arrow button, and redo many actions at the same time. Now I've put back on all of the changes that I've made. Notice the redo button has turned grey for that reason. The undo button remains available since I still have things in memory that can be undone. There are times when undo and redo are cleared. For instance, if I were to close this spreadsheet by clicking the x in the top right corner, save the changes that I've made to it by clicking yes to the message, and then reopen the spreadsheet through the file menu - notice the undo and redo buttons are both grey again. When you close and save your work the undo history is cleared. menu - notice the undo and redo buttons are both grey again. When you close and save your work the undo history is cleared.
