The Basics / Enter Data
Subtitles of the Movie
This lesson we'll discuss entering data into a spreadsheet. Excel can work with all types of data including numbers, dates, text and formulas. It is important to clearly label the columns and rows of data. So, we will begin by creating a worksheet for storing our financial records, by entering labels for each month. I'll begin with January, and then hit my right arrow to move right one cell and enter the value of January. I'll do the same for February and for March. As you move to another cell the value you've just typed becomes entered. Notice that since I've typed text, it's lining up along the left edge of the cell. Next, I'll enter the values for my electric bill. After labelling the row, I type the appropriate numbers, underneath the months that they go with. Notice that since they are numbers, they align with the right edge of the cell they are in. In my next row, I'll place my credit card bills. When I enter my amount for January, I just want to enter the amount and not move to a different cell. To do this you can click on the green checkmark in the formula bar. As I click, the value aligns to the right edge of the cell and the blinking cursor disappears, showing me that that value has been entered. The green checkmark is no longer available. To bring the checkmark back on screen, you have to begin editing the contents of another cell. As I begin to type this amount, the green checkmark reappears and clicking here once again will enter the value. By organizing your data into columns and rows you will make it easier to create calculations on the data. and rows you will make it easier to create calculations on the data.
