Windows Vista Exam (77-600) / Securing User Accounts
Subtitles of the Movie
User Accounts are Profiles. They uniquely identify a user on a computer and every user has one to uniquely identify themselves. The protection for the user is with passwords. A password can be assigned, or a user can set their own. The idea behind different users is to allow for different Rights and Permissions. This enables a cell to access different areas of the computer. In some cases I may wish to lock a user out of the Control Panel. It's a good practice with somebody that's a beginner that may not understand the differences between all of the components in the background. In the Control Panel is where we actually set up the User Accounts. In the User Accounts we have the ability to: Create passwords; to Manage encryption certificates; to Configure properties; and to Change environmental variables. You'll notice on the User Account itself the most popular features are to: Change passwords; Change your picture, your account name, type; or to Turn off the User Control Account. Let's talk about some of these components. First, let's go ahead and Manage Another Account. When you manage another account you have the option of changing information on your own account, or other accounts if you have the security to do so. Let's actually create a new account and talk about the Security settings through this screen. I'm going to just call this NewAccount. You will notice that the first thing it's going to ask me is if I'd rather have a Standard user or an Administrator. A Standard user can use most of the software and system changes settings, but they really can't touch anything that's going to effect computers across the Network. This is where things can be limited so that we don't trip over our own feet. The Administrator, on the other hand, has the ability to access anything on the computer and make any changes in the background. The recommendation is to have more Standard users than Administrators. However, there's a couple of things that are important. There is an actual user called Administrator that cannot be deleted. Make sure you write this password down and keep it in a very safe place because there are certain components that must be changed by the Administrator. There are certain components that cannot be changed by someone who has been given Administrator rights. It's important on the Examination to know that there is, indeed a difference between the default user called Administrator and a user that's been given Administrative rights. It is strongly recommended that you read up on this information. In cases of all of this information, you can immediately go to the Help Menu just by clicking on any blue area. Notice here I have the ability to: Change a user's account type; or, find information out about a Standard user or an Administrator. When you select the item you will get full information to finding the feature. These are the types of components that are necessary for the Examination of just being aware of the terminology that is used and the difference between those terms. Now, I will use the NewAccount as a Standard user, and then create the account. You'll notice now I have a new account with a picture that's set up automatically. If I'm happy, I can simply go back to the Main user's account. If I'd like to change some of the settings I would return again to Manage another account. If I'd like to change my own account you'll notice that I'll simply go to Change your account. Once again, it shows me whether I'm going to be Standard or Administrator. At this point, because I'm Password Protected as the Administrator, I'm going to leave it so I don't get into trouble with moving around the machine. Also keep in mind that when you're working with your accounts understanding File Encryption is important. File Encryption is a new feature in Windows Vista and Office 2007. It, in essence, allows us to scramble the data as we're sending it so that someone cannot accidentally open it up. Encryption is becoming more and more important in businesses today. This is another area that, although you do not need to go in depth to actually add an Encryption certification, you do need to understand what Encryption is. As always, take some time, go through the screens, understand how to Add and Change the users and you'll be ready for the Examination.
