Windows Vista Exam (77-600) / Internet Explorer Security

Subtitles of the Movie

You will need to be thoroughly comfortable with Internet Explorer 7.0 for the MCAS Examination. You must be quite proficient at the components of the screen, such as: the Back buttons; Forward buttons; Address Bar; the Refresh Bar; and the Stop button. Keep in mind also that in 2007 all the programs introduced Live Search. This is true of Internet Explorer 7.0 also. This Tutorial will not go through the basics of Internet Explorer. I do, however, do want to remind you that each of these components need to be identified. You must be comfortable with the screens of Internet Explorer 7.0. Equally important is the Tools Menu, specifically Internet Options. In the Internet Options is where we protect ourselves by employing our security measures. Although we think of security just as the Security tab itself, you'll also want to be aware of each of the other tabs that are in the Internet Options. Let's start with the Security tab itself, though. It is strongly recommended that you Enable Protected Mode and that you at no time go any lower than Medium-high Protection. The higher the protection that you set the more secure your program is. However, you'll need to keep in mind that when you do set your security to High you may interfere with performance. You should be aware of the Custom Levels that you can set. We are frequently asked to go to these areas when setting up a new application, or even access to a website, such as for online banking. You'll notice here that I have components that I can turn On and Off. The key is to be able to get to this screen and be able to toggle for whatever components that you are requested. Although you will not need to memorize each of these components you do want to be aware of the fact that you can change these Security settings. Notice also, I can reset them at any given time to High, or to Medium. You are no longer allowed to use a default of Low in Internet Explorer 7.0. You can still set it manually, but not by default. Also be aware of the fact that on the Internet we can set up Zones. These Zones will include Trusted sites. A site is where we can actually declare a website that we believe is okay, and that we allow access to a little quicker. Working with Trusted sites is also very important when working with the rest of Office 2007 when it comes to running code and macros. You'll also notice that we can Restrict Sites. Here I can stop any activity through particular websites. This feature is becoming more and more important as we find the Internet has a few dangers out there. Now when working with Security do make sure you understand each of the features on the screen. You may wish to go to the Help Menu to read up on them. Remember, you will not be given access to the Help Menus on the Examination. You will have to know where to go on your own. The time to look at the Help Menu is prior to the Examination. Let's go back to the General screen. The General screen will also help us with Security by allowing us to clean our Internet activity. It is very important to consistently delete Temporary files, Cookies, and other information that could make you vulnerable. Simply go to the Delete tab and it allows you to choose each one individually. This is a common question on the Examination: How could I go ahead and delete the Cookies and the History from Internet Explorer? To answer that question you'll need to go to the Tools Menu, to the Internet Options, and to Delete. Also included on the Examination are some questions regarding Connections. Where do I go to set up a Connection? How do I see if the defaults for my web browser are set correctly? These are all handled within the Internet Options screen. Make sure you take some time to thoroughly understand the components that are contained within this dialog box. Remember also, it's important to be comfortable with Windows Internet Explorer 7.0. Be aware of where your Favorite buttons are, be aware of the new tabbing within Internet Explorer. You'll never know when a question comes up to ask you to add another tab to an Explorer Window.
