A new addition in Windows Vista is the introduction of the Sidebar. The Sidebar is a feature that allows us to place tools that we will use frequently on the Desktop. They're meant to be mini-applications. The Sidebar appears on the right-hand side of your screen. In this instance you'll notice that I have three items. These items are referred to as Gadgets. The concept is that you can quickly update yourself on a component by looking at your Sidebar. In this case there is a Slide presentation, a Clock, and a little Game that I can play just to relax. If I'd like to add a new Gadget to the Sidebar I'll simply go to the top. You'll see a Plus. When I click the Plus sign it shows me the Gadgets that are currently on my machine. You'll notice that you can get quite a few more Gadgets online. The concept here: if I would like to see a Weather report, Headlines, Stocks, or even what Currency is doing, I can add the Gadget to the Sidebar. I'm going to select the CPU Meter. All I need to do is to double-click and it appears on the Sidebar. Close out of the Gadget Window and I've returned to my Desktop. Now I can see how much of my actual CPU that I am using, and you can see I'm safe. Very little of it is being used at this time. If I go back over to the Sidebar and right-click you'll notice that I can Close the Sidebar. Now, one note that is important for the examination. If you type Sidebar into Search it'll automatically turn it back on again. No need to have to search through Windows Vista to find how to turn it on. Simply type the word Sidebar into Search. Now, you'll notice that I can also add Gadgets or bring Gadgets to the front. There are quite a few Gadgets so only so many can fit on the screen at a time. If I go to any particular Gadget I can detach it from the actual Sidebar. When I select it notice that it's gone and it's in my Main Window. If I'd like to close it, I'll go next to the Gadget, see the X, and it's gone. You will see that each of the Gadgets have the same X when they're in the Sidebar itself. I have the ability to look at that Gadget just on the right-hand side of the screen or open it up so it's another section of the screen itself. A Gadget has additional options that can be changed for its display style. Keep in mind that each individual Gadget can be right-clicked and you can look at some of the options. In this case the options for the Clock allow me to name it, allow me to show the current time, and it also allows me to show a second hand if I'd like to see the second hand. It reset itself when I close and will now show me the timing that is involved. Keep in mind that there are many free Gadgets available on the Internet that can be downloaded. Also, it's very important to remember, this is a brand new feature. As a result you're guaranteed questions on the Examination. The most important aspect to remember is that there are a great deal of Gadgets that you can add. Although it is not necessary to memorize each of these Gadgets you will indeed need to know how to put the Gadgets on. Remember, its simply a double-click and it appears on the Sidebar itself. In this case I've added a Post It Note. If an Examination question comes up: How can I put notes to my self on my Desktop? The answer would be by using the actual Sidebar and adding the Notes Gadget. Working with the Gadgets can be very easy and very useful. If, for instance, you're traveling frequently you may want weather reports, or news headlines to be there automatically. The Clock, of course, is a wonderful feature to keep yourself adjusted to what time of day it is. Make sure that you are thoroughly familiar with the Sidebar. Remember also, at any given time, you can just simply close it off and return to your Desktop.
