Anytime there's a new addition or a new version of a piece of software, the big question becomes well what's new about this thing, why do I want to invest the time and money to leave something I'm very comfortable with Access 2010 and jump into 2013? Well let's talk about some of the new features of Access 2013 and we're going to touch on these as we go through the course here. First of all probably the biggest thing that's new in Access 2013 that's really capturing a lot of attention is something called web applications. Now this is a new database project type and so we can still create desktop databases. But a web application is a whole new deal and this is a web application that kind of builds itself, we actually deploy this as a SharePoint app. For those of you who've worked with SharePoint you just got a pretty good idea of the kind of power involved here. And by the way these web applications are totally Access look, feel, developed but they run in a web browser and they run as part of SharePoint. Really, really interesting functionality and it's really going to expose a lot of data much more easily to the entire enterprise. Now there's been a number of architectural changes in Access as a result of this. And it just simply makes these web apps happen. You don't have to know JavaScript and html and you know all this other stuff. With what you already know about Access or what you're going to learn in this course, you'll be able to make these web apps happen. It's some really, really forward thinking technology on Microsoft's part and a really great way of kind of integrating SharePoint and the actual data back ends. Something else about Access in 2013 it integrates much more closely with SQL Server. Don't want to go too deep there right now but trust me you're going to like what's happening and this is also going to help you kind of get a little more familiar with SQL Server and get a little more comfortable with it if you've never jumped into that arena. Now terminology, you're going to see some new terminologies in Access 2013. For example when you're working in web applications and you're looking at documentation or help files, forms are now called views in web applications and views is actually a more technically correct term for what forms are. But you'll see some different terminologies, I'll touch on these as we move through the course. Next you're going to see a new IDE and of course IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment and really that's a fancy way of saying the environment that we see on our screen when we're creating our Access databases. And making them function the way we want. There's much easier, more streamlined development process and interface screens that you deal with, we'll get into that more. And then this is getting a lot of attention, two new controls have been designed specifically for the web app environment. And that is the Auto Complete Control, you've seen these, you start typing things and you type two or three letters and it automatically goes and does the search and completes it for you and fills it out. It's a great piece of functionality, it's there you don't have to write a bunch of code and it just works for you. And then Related Items and rather than try to explain that to you I'll just show it to you a little bit later on the course. So a lot of really neat new things happening in 2013. This is going to be one of those versions of Access that we look back on in a few years and say wow, that's when it really took a change for some really, really neat forward thinking functionality. And I think we're going to see Access grow up here a lot and mature and move more into the web app environment. And that's really cool because it's going to bring a lot of really good developers out there on the Access platform up into the web app world very, very easily and that's always a good thing for our organization. So that's some of the things that are new in 2013 and we'll touch on a few more as we move through the course.
