Opening Access 2010 is somewhat of a joke the first time because you realize there's been some changes made and we're not in Kansas anymore with Access. And so, there's some really cool enhancements to Access 2010 and this is one of those enhancements. When you open Access 2010 this is where you land. Now how did I get here? I clicked on the Start button, I want to All Programs, Microsoft Office, and you can see there's Access 2010. Now what's cool is I downloaded the Office 2010 trial and you can get this off of Microsoft's website. Just go search for it. And then I just installed it. I did a custom installation, installed Access and PowerPoint, and you can run these trial versions right alongside your old versions until you decide you want it or till you come up with the cash to buy it, or whatever the deal is, but that's what I'm doing here. And I'm running Trial specifically so that you can go get the trial version and it'll look just like mine because Microsoft, from time to time, will tweak these things, make minor changes, and I don't want you to get confused. So I'm running the Trial version here, just like you're going to get if you go download it and install it. Now, there's a lot going on in this new environment right here that you see when you first open Access 2010 and this is called the Backstage View, and notice it's the File Tab. Now, if I click on the Home Tab you'll notice these other tabs, I'm right back into the old Access world. But for now let's talk about this one. Now, when I first open up and it drops me on the Backstage View there's a lot of things I can do. On the left side here, notice, I can Open a file, it'll browse out to my hard disk and I can grab things. I can Open Recently Used files - this is one we're going to be using quite extensively in the course. I can look at Recent, I can see Recently Opened Files. I can Pin them, I can Unpin them - but if I Pin it, it will never go away. It'll always be there. If I Unpin it as I open more, they will show up here but then eventually they'll start to replace those and they'll roll off. If I click on the New Tab, notice this is where it opens up by default. I can open a Blank Database, a Blank Web Database - we'll talk about that a little bit later on in the course. I have some Templates, and notice if I double-click on Sample Templates I can see these are templates. Now, this is the skeletal structure for databases with tables and all sorts of things, but there's no data there, alright, and so we can use those to kick them off. And you can see some kind of interesting cool things here, and we can also go out to Office.com and get some more templates if I click right here. There are some other projects down here that I can work with and play with that I've already had open and working with, and you can go grab them and play with these yourself, alright? So, Templates are kind of cool and they're expanded in Access 2010. If I need any help, what's the chances of that? I can click on Help right here on the left, and I can get Microsoft Office Help, I can do some Getting Started information, I can set Options for working with Office, Check for Updates on Office - and you will want to do this from time to time - and then, of course, over here it's pointing out that I'm a Trial version and I've got 25 days to work with this and I'll have to buy a product license. Now, Options is the important one. And then, if you remember, before you went up here to that Start button in the previous versions and got on Options, well, this is where we do it now, and this gives us a lot more room to work with. Once we jump in here it is exactly what we've seen before. And I'm not going to go through a lot of these. We will come back in and play with these a little bit later on from time to time in the course, but if you just kind of go in here and look around you can see some of the things that have been back there - notice Customizing Ribbon - you can do a whole lot more with the Ribbon in this environment of Access and the Quick Access Toolbar which we'll talk about later as well. So, that's where I get to my Options. And then if I want to close Access this is where I hit it, right here. Now, this will kind of confuse you and mess with you a little bit if you're a big time Access 2007 user and earlier, but you'll get used to it really quick and you'll like it, especially the Options. We've been able to get to them right here. So, anyway, don't worry about this area over here. We're going to talk about this when we talk about creating a new database in Access.
