Introduction / Getting Set Up
Subtitles of the Movie
Now let's talk about getting your computer set up so that you can work along with me in the course. Now keep in mind, this is always tough because you never know which direction things are going to go. Depending on the Operating System you have, the curvature of the earth's sunspots, all that sort of thing, you may run into any number of errors. First thing you want to do is go out and download and install the Visual Web Developer tool. Now you can get this at HTTP www.microsoft.com/express. Now I actually went to this Web site in a different video, it was the Visual Studio Overview video and I actually go to that Web site and move around on it and show you some things so you may want to go watch that video. Next you need to go download and install SQL Server 2008 Express. You can actually do either one of these and you can find SQL Server 2008 Express Edition at that same location. Now the reason I'm having you install SQL Server 2008 Express and you really don't have to do this, gosh I don't want to confuse you here, if you'll install the Visual Web Developer and tell it to use SQL Server it will install SQL Server 2008 Express for you. You can go out to this particular location, chose SQL Server 2008 Express and tell it just to install the Management Tools. What we're trying to get at here are the Management Tools so that we can manage, or manipulate, our SQL Server database because you can't add new databases from inside Visual Web Developer and so forth. But it's not going to hurt you to get your hands on SQL Server Express if you've never seen that. The next thing is I have put a copy of the Pubs Database in your Workfiles Folder, reason being it doesn't come with SQL Server 2008 Express. You won't see any sample databases and Microsoft now uses that AdventureWorks Database. However, the Pubs Database, which came in 2000 and previous, is a much simpler, easier to use database, so therefore I use it for all of my overview classes and for new students and so forth. So instead of you having to go out on the Internet and try to find it and go through all kinds of scripts, I have put a copy in the Workfiles Folder, so just go grab that, drag it onto your machine and what we're going to do is we're going to attach that database to the SQL Server. For this point you'll notice that I have already downloaded and installed Visual Web Developer and I've downloaded and installed SQL Server 2008 Express. When you get into this you will most likely get some sort of error message or you need to do this or you need to do that, just follow the links and play along. If you run into a road block go out to Google and look around. There's all kinds of forums and stuff out there that'll give you help on getting Express and Visual Web Developer set up. Just query your problem, query installing Visual Web Developer, installing SQL Server 2008 Express and you can find out what's going on. I've installed these, now let me go out and show you what's happening and so let's go to the Desktop. Now here we are on my Desktop and you will notice that I have copied the PUBS.mdf file out of the Workfiles Folder and onto my Desktop. First of all, let's open the Visual Web Developer and you'll notice it shows up in your Programs list, Visual Web Developer 2008 Express and if I open that it should open up and you should see something similar to this; not exactly like this. And notice we still activate this - I've got 25 days, I won't worry about it today - so if you get this you're OK. Close that. And then you should see, if you installed Express SQL Server during your Visual Web Developer and then went back and installed the Management Tools for it, then you should be able to open this up and see something like this. When you're connecting to your SQL Express you're going to use the name of your Server, the name of your machine - mine's WINSEVEN - and then you're going to put/SQLEXPRESS. Click Connect and it will go in and show you your Databases. Now, I need the PUBS Database to be in here and you'll notice that it's not. Well, I have it sitting on my Desktop, and I'll just minimize it. I want to show you what I'm going to do. If I click on the computer and go into C, Program Files, Microsoft SQL Server, you'll see MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS, MSSQ - I'll just keep going till I'm, I'm looking for the DATA files, so I'll put it right there. I'm just going to drag PUBS in here and say move it here. So now it's in that file. Notice I'm on Windows 7 so I can click up here and I can see the entire path, so I'll close that. I will go back into my Management Studio and now I want to attach the PUBS Database, so I right-click on Databases, choose Attach, then I will click Add out here and I will Browse to where that file is and if you have to browse just move through it like we did, C, Program Files, Microsoft SQL Server, MSSQL, DATA and there's the PUBS.MDF that I set out here. Then I hit OK, so that's my file. Now notice it's telling me down here it doesn't see a log file and so I will click that and just remove it. All I'm attaching is MDF. It will create a log file for me. We won't go into a SQL class here, but I'll just say OK and notice I now have the PUBS Database on my machine. So that's how to get set up. Once you're at this point you should be good to go and we are now ready to end the class and start working in Visual Web Developer and we can later bind some Data Controls to the PUBS Database and we can do some cool stuff. But that'll get you on the same page with me.
