I am going to create a NURBS primitive sphere. We are going to use this sphere to start learning how to animate in Maya. I am going to move this sphere's position; you can see in the channel box, the values have changed, and we’ll discuss the user interface channel box. We'll learn how we can right mouse button click on a channel, select key select/deselect keyframes. You can also select the object with which you want to set keyframes and press the 's' button. Note in the channel box how all the attributes have turned tan in color, that means that this object and these channels are now being animated. Move your time slider to a different frame and time and you can see there is a red dash indicated where a keyframe has been set. Before you set another keyframe, be certain that you place the time slider on the frame on which you wish to place the key then move your object. I can press 's' again and I have set another keyframe. Now watch as the object moves if I hit the playback button from one key frame to the next. When we pressed the 's' button, you can see that all of the channels became shaded, even though only two of the channels show any change. So we've created keyframes for each one of these channels and we don't actually need a keyframe for each of these channels. There are ways for us to focus where we wish to set our keys, more specifically. I have already shown how you can right mouse button click and select for each channel. Or let's say you wish to just set keyframes for the translation information. If you press the shift and the 'w' button, that will set a keyframe, actually move the ball to frame 10. I’m going to press shift 'w' and see the keyframe that I have created, and that just applies to the translation information. I am going to select all of my channels; I am going to right mouse button click; go to cut selected; I've deleted all of the keyframes. My object no longer moves; I am going to start fresh at zero; and I am going to demonstrate again the shift 'w' button, Shift 'w' - there you can see just the translation values have been key framed. Shift 'w' - let's move my time slider, then move the object, shift 'w', here we go. And I've created, I've created keyframes that just affect the translation values of the object. Now I can move the object around all I like, but as soon as I move the time slider the object will return to the keyframes. I can use the Shift button and the 'e' button together to key the rotation of the object. Again watch the channel box - there I've set a key frame for rotation on frame 1; now I can go to frame 35; rotate the object into a new position; press shift 'e'. I've set another keyframe and this is just for rotation, and watch the object rotate as it moves. And I can also set the scale information keyframe through the scale information, by pressing shift 'r'. It is possible in the timeline to manipulate your keyframes, by right mouse button clicking on them you can cut them, and copy them, you can paste them, you can delete them. So there are different ways of actually manipulating your keyframes in the timeline. That concludes this segment of how to animate using keyframes - we'll continue the discussion of animation in the next movie.
