If I press this button here after I'm in object mode, that will toggle me into component mode and you'll see that these icons will change. These are masks function - exactly the same way that when you depress these buttons you allow yourself to select those components. And you should know that when you are working in component mode, you are working on the shape node, you are working sort of below the hierarchy of the pivot point. And you use these masks primarily for modeling and for a little bit of character setup. Ok, so in object mode I am going to create a sphere and then I am going to use the hot key for toggling into component mode which is the F8 key. And you will see that when you press the F8 key the sphere will display this way, and you will see the CV's, Hulls and the isoparms of the NURBs surface that we discussed in the last, or a few sections ago. The most important selection mask in component mode that I would like you to know are these three: points select by component type points; select my component type lines; and select my component type Hulls, right here. Look what happens if I turn off or I turn on the mask for Hulls, currently the mask for Hull selection is off. So left mouse button on that and now you will see that Hulls or the Hull display will disappear, so you can no longer select Hulls. If I left mouse button again on the Hull button, you can see that now I can select complete parameters of the surface. With select by component type points turned off, I will turn it off right now by left mouse buttoning on it. You will see that CV's control points don't even display and again if I turn - so I can't select them. They will display if I select the whole line but I can't work with CVs individually here I will have to turn back the selection mask to turn it off and then they will display - the CVs will display and now of course I can select them and work with them as I wish, Okay. Select by component type lines allows you to select isoparms and work with isoparms. I am left mouse buttoning now on different isoparms and it allows me to work with them. This also allows you to work with polygon edges. If I turn this off, that's to say if I turn the mask on okay, I am now unable to work with isoparms - I cam only work with CVs and Hulls. Now these are the three most important selection masks for working in component mode for modeling. Again when you insert control points, you insert more CVs, you will need to work with select by component type lines in order to enter the new CV points. And then when you are actually sculpting your surface you will be working with CVs or points and Hulls. They are very very useful - and pick masks are very very useful in component mode. And you will find that interactively you will turn them on and off as needed. Again the hot key from toggling back from object to component mode is F8.
