Subtitles of the Movie

The keys I am going to talk about now are the 4, 5, 6, and 7 keys, and they are intended to be used with the 1, 2 and 3 keys to change the way objects are displayed. Alright, I am going to maximize the perspective view and if I press the 4 key, that displays the wire frame view which we see here - the sphere displayed with just it's isoparms. If I press the 5 key you will see that the object fills in with color - this displays the object with materials. I am going to select the object and just for purposes of display, up displays smoothness, so that you can see what is really going on here. The blend material is displayed when we press the 5 key, and the characteristic or the main characteristic of a blend material is that it has a shiny specular highlight. The sphere has been assigned a blend material and we'll cover that in a future section. If I press the 6 key, it displays the sphere with the textures, or with the texture that has been assigned to the sphere. This is what's called a ramped texture and you'll see that the specular highlight will also not be displayed when we press the 6 key. I've dollied out on the sphere a little bit and you can see that I have a spotlight right here in the scene. If I press the 7 key you will see a slightly different display, you'll see the light as it is incident with the sphere. Watch as I pull the manipulator of the light away from the sphere - you'll see the light move off of the sphere, now the sphere is no longer illuminated by the light. As I push the light back you'll see light falling back onto the sphere again. And I'll press the 4 key and go back to wire frame view. As you are working in Maya you'll find that you'll be cycling between these different display modes. The 5 through 7 keys allow you to display surfaces and objects in what is called hardware shaded view. In the sense that a an approximation of the final rendered picture is displayed using the CPU and the video card. And this display is done in real time. Ok, I am going to minimize my perspective view. And to close this section I want to discuss how the 4 through 7 keys are, or operate window specific designations. So in the perspective view you can see that we have textures displayed with the impact of lights. I can go into my side view and press the 5 key and display with materials and now minimize the side view. Go into my front view and display with textures and leave my top view in wire frame view. When you press anyone of these keys, understand that it effects the window, that whole window entirely, all of the objects depicted by that window. Just why I say that - this is a window specific function. So for review - 4 displays with wire frame or displays objects in wire frame form; 5 displays objects with materials; 6 displays objects textures - the textures applied to objects; and if I press the 7 key it displays lights in combination with materials or textures.
