Maya 8.5 Fundamentals Tutorials

Introduction / New in Maya 8.5

Subtitles of the Movie

If you're coming to Maya 8.5 from a previous version you may notice quite a few changes around the interface. First of all, in the animation menu set. This has been straightened out a lot. The deformers used to all have a single, very long menu. Those have been broken up into Creation of Deformers and Editing of Deformers. There's also Geometry Cashing, which allows for improved playback speed. Rather than solving Deformers on the fly, you can cash out the vertex positions. Other changes: there have been just general speed improvements across the board, especially with influence objects in a smooth bound skin and improvements in multi-core machines especially. There are some modeling changes. If you hit the Polygons you'll notice that we now have broken out Mesh, Edit Mesh, as well as Proxy. We have a Reflection mode for edits, so now if I create, let's say a polygon sphere and head to Face mode, grab a face here, a few of them let's say, and go to the Tools settings for the Rotate tool, and see that I can now turn on Reflection and as I rotate faces on one side, I get an automatic reflection on the other side, and that's a new way of working. You can also still use the Proxy mode for splitting across the middle. There's also a lot of changes in the ScriptEditor. If we open this guy up you'll see that we now have tabs at the bottom and you can create new tabs. Cancel that, create, hey, cut that out. There we go, new tab. And you have the choice now of choosing a mel or a python tab, and this is another big change in eight five; you can now access all of the mel commands and hook into the API using python. There are also some interactive primitives changes. So if I delete this guy out of here and head to create polygon primitives, and let me turn on Interactive Creation, and let's go to something like a cylinder, turn on after Creation Adjustments on Subdivisions and Cap Subdivisions, and now go back to that, Create Poly Primitives Cylinder. You can see now I get options for dragging the base, dragging the height, dragging to increase or decrease the subdivisions and access subdivisions and end-cap subdivisions. So, that's a new feature for creating primitives. There's also the entire new architecture for cloth and simulations called N-cloth, and this is something that could be an entire VTC on its own. And there's also a unified cashing for the dynamics that this is part of so things are coming together for hair, for cloth, and some of the other dynamics, and those are things to also watch for in the future. So those are just some of the changes that you'll see in 8.5, and as always, you can head to the Help section and go to What's New to learn more about these features.
