Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie I just want to talk to you quickly about if you want to make a template from the ground up. What's nice is there's so many templates out there you have a lot to work with and files to reference. The first thing I do is create a directory for my template, then I'll start looking through my files and see where I can start. Maybe I want to start with looking at parameters, maybe I want to start with index.php, or templates.xml. What I usually do is open up that file for a site that I kind of like their layout and their look. Take a look at that XML file. What I'll do then is just start creating my own XML file. Sometimes I'll Copy and Paste and then correct the information; sometimes I'll just take a copy of this file and go through and change things as I need to, but you just go through the elements that you know of at this moment. You're not going to know all your images, but this is a good starting point what positions do you want to use. The other thing you can do, of course, is open up index.php, look at that. Go start building your own. Are you going to have parameters? Get your parameters going. Create yourself an image file so you can start putting your images inside there. If you are going to create it from scratch the definite thing you need to do is draw it out ahead of time, what you're thinking of, or start out with a very basic site. But if you don't know on paper how it's going to look in the end you're going to have a hard time building it. Some people also start building a site by creating the images so they can see it onscreen and how it's going to finally look or hope to look, then come back here and actually start building these index.php files, template details, et cetera. So if you do want to get started on that you have the basic knowledge you need now to understand all that coding that's inside these files.
