Welcome to the Virtual Training Company's course on ActionScript 3 and Payment Gateway APIs. I'm Richard Bates and I'll be your instructor for this course. So as you probably already third party merchant payment processors expose their services to developers like you through APIs or Application Programming Interfaces and usually you'll provided code libraries or examples in many different languages including PHP, ASP, Java and maybe Python or Ruby. But it is unusual to see some of these provided in ActionScript and it's typical in your Flash Flex or Air Application to utilize these services by connecting through one of these other languages as a proxy. But sometimes it would be better and more convenient for you to use ActionScript alone. But not always, remember that you'll still have situations where connecting to Server Side PHP or ASP or Java will still be the way to go. If you have concerns about the Flash Security Sandbox or you have a lot of services that are already running on the server then that may be the way to go. But if ActionScript only if the way to go for your project you'll want to keep in mind that these should be created with a focus on Modularity and Object Orientation because you'll have the ability to reuse these over and over again because you'll probably have many clients who use the same Payment Gateway Processors. In this MasterClass we're going to be covering Custom ActionScript 3 Classes and Modules for Authorize.net and PayPal. Authorize.net if you're not familiar with it already is a more traditional processor whose API resembles face to face transactions. For instance the customer will present with a credit card the information is provided to Authorize.net and the response comes back approved or declined or error and it's a one off credit card based system. PayPal on the other hand is geared towards smaller merchants and it has an Internet centric model, the users have PayPal Accounts and they can be funded by any number of sources which are unknown to you, the merchant. For both of these we'll create self contained ActionScript Code that works on its own without the need for an external proxy. But for PayPal we'll also use a more advanced integration method that does use a PHP Proxy and makes the whole payment process transparent to your users, keeping them within your application for the entire process.
