Tools / Variable Stroke Pen

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's take a look at the variable stroke pen tool, of course this is found for some reason under the pencil tool. So go select that and I will draw a variable stroke line. Ok where is the variable stroke. Well, this tool is designed to be used with a pressure pad. You can simulate this on a keyboard by using the left and right arrow keys. Now by pressing to the left I get a thinner line and using the right arrow key I get a fatter line. Set to values that we'll talk about in a second. So we just use the left and right arrow keys to change the width of your line that's where the variable part comes in. Now let's get rid of this and take a look at some of our options. Double click the tool and you will get the precision, which you can set anywhere from 1 to 10. Again this gives you the number of variables that are going to show up in your line. You can also set this to draw a dotted line if you move very quick like I am about to do. And I'll just draw the dotted line to save the computer from rendering a line. I'm free-styling it here. Ok, kind of a mess but you get the picture. All right, let's see what else we can do. Now we have a neat tool here called auto remove overlap. What I am going to do is turn this off, I am going to draw a series of curves that overlap each other. Let's see what that looks like. Ok, notice that this stroke overlaps parts of the line. Now I have turned this feature on, auto remove overlap is now turned on. And I am once again going to draw a series of curves that overlap each other and then notice what happens. The stroke does not intersect the inside of the fill like it does in this drawing. And then we can also set the minimum width for our stroke, our line and the maximum width. This is based on anywhere from 1 to 72 points, and that's the variable stroke pen tool.
