When you are working with text blocks, there may be times when you want to work with columns for newsletter or other publications. Freehand lets you do that in a pretty nifty way. Simply select your text block, this is the one I want to convert into columns. Go to the Object panel, select the Column icon, let's take a look and see what we can do. Here we can set the number of columns, I'll just go and enter 2 columns, hit Enter. Also create 3 columns, so forth and so on. Now these are columns within the text block, not columns within the page. Let's go back to 2. We can control the spacing or gutter, which is essentially the spacing between our columns. We can control the height of the columns; and we can also add rules between the columns. Now, in Freehand we can also create rows as well as columns. Let's go ahead and create 3 rows to break our text up, like so. Again you can control spacing, width, and rules. Let's go back and just change this to 2 columns, take a look at our flow controls. Now you can also determine how that text is flowed between the columns and the rows. In this case, the flow control is set from left to right, then down, then left to right again. So the text goes from left to right, then down, left to right. I can also change that from down, the text will flow down, and pick up on this column, and then go down again. Those are some of the column and row controls you have in Freehand MX.
