New Features in ActionScript / ActionScript Enhancements

Subtitles of the Movie

Everytime a new version of Flash is released I spend the first week or so familiarizing myself with the latest action script methods. There's a quick and easy way to do this. First, click on the stage and you'll notice down in your property inspector a publish icon. Right now it is selected for Flash player 6 so what we'll do is we'll click on this and we are going to change the version we are targeting to Flash player 5. Click OK and now by hitting F9 we can look in our actions panel and notice there are several different commands, or in this case books, that are selected and highlighted in yellow. The yellow simply means that that command is not available in this version of the player or what I'm targeting. Notice down here it reflects the fact I'm targeting Flash player 5. So each one of these commands, which as you'll notice are all components, are not available in Flash player 5. That makes sense because components were first released in Flash MX. But I'll go a step farther. I usually click on the index and then I can scroll down and look at the entire list of commands that are available. Let's take a look and see how many new commands there are in action script in Flash MX. Quite a few. So the next thing I would do is I would click on one ,let's say "get enabled" and to find out more about this you simply bring up the code reference panel, which is shift F1, and the reference guide will now list that exact command. You can see information about this, it's available only in Flash player 6, shows you the usage, parameters, what it returns and it will often show an example of code usage. To return back to the actions panel simply hit F9 and you'll be returned to your list. Let's look for some other commands that are interesting to us. Let's click on the "on load, load vars command", shift F1 takes us to the reference panel. Notice again this is available only in Flash player 6 and it shows you how to use it and gives you a description. I'll go through this process until I'm familiar with all the commands that I'll most likely use. Hit F9 to return back to the actions panel and again you can pick another one, shift F1 takes you into the reference guide. So as you can tell this is a good, quick and easy way to familiarize yourself with the new commands in action script. quick and easy way to familiarize yourself with the new commands in action script.
