Assigning a URL to a web object creates a link to a file, such as a web page. You can assign URLs to Hotspots, Buttons and Slice objects. We intend to use the same URL several times over within a particular document, which is quite common for web site development. And you can create a URL Library in the URL panel, and store the URLs in the library. You can use the URL panel event to edit, add and organize your URLs. For example, if your web site contains several navigation buttons to return to your home page, you can add the URL for your home page to the URL panel. Then you assign this URL to each navigation button by selecting it in the URL Library. On our canvas, I have created a slice and a Hotspot. And I'm going to go ahead and select the slice object and add a link to it. And we do that in the URL panel. I'm going to go ahead and type in about_us.htm. And now we have created a link to this slice. So when we export this document, this link will be active when selected, it will go to about_us.htm. I'm going to go ahead and select our Hotspot, and add another URL. In this case it's called Industrial - industrial.htm. And if you noticed, as we're adding these various links, they are being added to our library at the same time. So if we have additional navigation buttons we need to apply these different URLs to, they are already here for us. This is a terrific time-saver. I'll go ahead and add another slice. And we'll see this in action. Right now we do not have a URL assigned to this particular slice. I can type one in as I did before, or I can go down to the Dropdown Menu and simply select any of the URLs to our library. And now that link, that URL is assigned to our slice. There are two types of URLs you can enter - an Absolute and Relative URL. A good rule of thumb is this: if you are linking to a web page that is beyond your own web site, you must use an Absolute URL. An Absolute URL would be something like this: http://www.macromedia.com/index.htm And that is an absolute URL: it is pointing to a specific document, using the proper syntax. In the previous examples, we were using Relative URLs. And that is just the name of the page. And if you are linking to a web page within your own web site, you can use Absolute URLs or Relative URLs. Once again, Relative URLs are ideal for your own web page, your own web site. Absolute URLs are complete URLs that include the Server protocol, which is most often http://. Absolute URLs remain accurate, regardless of the location of the source document. But they do not link correctly if the target document is moved. Now, although we have created three links including our example for www.macromedia.com, we have not added them to our library. Let's go ahead and do that. We have a library by default, URLs.htm. And with this link selected, I'm going to click on the + button. And now that link has been added to our library. And I'll do the same thing for about_us.htm and industrial.htm. If I wanted to remove a link from the library, I could simply select it, and then click on the Trash Can. And if I want to add another link, I can simply click on the + button next to the Trash Can and then type in my URL. And there are other options available to you in the URL panel. You can add used URLs to the library, you can clear all unused URLs from the library, which is pretty handy if you have been changing your web site and perhaps the URL is no longer used. You can add a URL, delete, edit; you can create a new URL Library. You can also import URLs, and those are imported from an htm or html Document. You can export URLs, and of course there is help available to you as well as options for docking the URL panel with other panels. , and of course there is help available to you as well as options for docking the URL panel with other panels.
