Intro / Importing and Pasting

There are several ways you can import vector and bitmap graphics within Fireworks. And one of the simplest is to select file, and then import. And the import dialogue box will appear. If we go to the files of type, and we select drop down menu, you can see the wide range of files that Fireworks can import. PNG files, the native file format for Fireworks. Freehand, GIF, JPEG, Photoshop, CorelDraw, WBMT, which is the one bit monochrome file format used for wireless or WAP devices. TIFF, target, BMP, Illustrator, EPS, rich text format HTML, ASCII, so forth. So you can actually import a wide range of files. I am going to go ahead and select all readable files. I am going to go ahead and select eye.jpg and you can see in the right hand corner a preview of the image has appeared. I will go ahead and select open. This little bracket pointer, a cursor, appears indicating that the dots per square inch of that image is different then my current canvas settings. So what I need to is, hold down the mouse button and drag and you can see a small bounding box appears. When I release it, there is our image on the eye. There is also another way we can import both vector and bitmap images directly within Fireworks. I am going to go to paint shop pro, and we can see we have the image of the eye here. And I am going to select copy, and close this out and then go under edit and select paste. And of course I could use control C and control V on a PC to do the same thing. Now because the image resolution is different than my canvas resolution, we get this dialogue box saying that the pasted image has a different resolution. Fireworks wants to know if it should re-sample the image to match the current document. Now by re-sampling, that means that the various pixels might be eliminated or reduced to reduce the size of the image. And this could degrade the quality of the image. So this is a concern; you may want to use another application to resize it to the proper size before importing it. I am going ahead and select resample, and here is the image and you can see it actually looks pretty decent, pretty close to the one we actually opened and imported directly into Fireworks. I mostly use import for importing vector or EPS vector objects to retain transparency and so forth. And most often actually cut, copy and paste directly into Fireworks with bitmap images to build my comps and interfaces and so forth. opy and paste directly into Fireworks with bitmap images to build my comps and interfaces and so forth.
