One of the really cool things about Fireworks, along with Dreamweaver and Flash, is the ability to utilize extensions. And extensions increase the functionality and capabilities of the program. These can be written by Macromedia or by third parties. And there are quite a few extensions available, not only onMacromedia site, but all over the web. If we select commands, we can take a look at the extensions that we have within Fireworks. This will bring up the extension manager. And right now we have a drop down list and we are viewing the extensions that are loaded within Fireworks MX. If I were to select this dropdown menu, I can view the different extensions for Dreamweaver UltraDev4 or Flash MX. The Macromedia extension manager is where you load and manage your extensions. The first thing you see in the left-hand side is on and off. And this is how you turn on and turn off extensions. Changing an extension such as adding one or turning one off, will not take effect until you close off out the application and restart it. If we select the different extensions, we can see some information about it. For example let's take a look at add arrowheads. And this command allows you to add any of 17 arrowhead styles to a selected open path. To use arrowheads, select an open vector path, then in the commands menu select create>add arrowheads - very straightforward and very easy to use. I have added several extensions to Fireworks. We'll take a look at one of those in just a few moments. Harmonia is a extension I downloaded recently and added to Fireworks MX. And let's take a look at what this does. Harmonia generates harmonious color schemes with ease. Simply select a color from the color spectrum, and Harmonia gives you its complementary, split complementary, triad and analogous colors. And this Command is accessible via Commands>Project Fireworks and Harmonia. In this column we can see the version of the various extensions we have installed, we can see the extension type, and the author. I am going to go ahead and close the extensions panel. And under the commands main menu, let's take a look at some of the extensions. Under creative we can see add arrowheads, and this is the extension we were looking at a little bit earlier. We also have an extension to add a picture frame, convert to gray scale, convert to sepia tone, fade image, or twist and fade. Let's take a look at project Fireworks>Harmonia. And this extension gives you the ability to look at various colors and see the harmonious colors adjacent to it. Simply selecting a color, and the pattern changes. And this extension is available for free from projectfireworks.com A very cool extension indeed. available for free from projectfireworks.com A very cool extension indeed.
