Connections / Connection Overview

Subtitles of the Movie

Alright, let us say you have your WebPages upon a web server and you need to make some edits to it. Well the first thing you need to figure out is how you are going to connect to that web server. Now Contribute will give you three different ways to do that, the most common is called FTP where FTP stands for file transfer protocol and probably the most common method of transferring files which is web pages and graphics between two computers that are connected to the internet. Now web server often use FTP to sent files back and forth between the servers where your web page is stored and the files on your computer. To do this you normally need to program that is called an FTP client which is just an application that allows you to transfer files back and forth. Now a webpage editing or creation program like Contribute2 or Dreamweaver, these folks have FTP clients build into the program like Contribute does. Now one of the drawbacks to FTP is there is really no built in security. Now if you can also work with secure FTP otherwise known as SFTP which encrypts the information that sent between your computer and the web sever. Now that depends on the kind of information that you have on what type of FTP you are going to be doing like in this case there is nothing secure I have no states secrets on this website or proprietary information so I have no problem sending it through standard FTP. If you are dealing with sensitive information perhaps on the internet sales figures that you do not have to make public yet or product designs you may want to look in to the secure or SFTP. Now if you are a user you are going to need to get some information before we can get you connected in the next lesson. Now that information you can get from your administrator or from your network person or your ISP or web host. This is the information you are going to need, you are going to need your name and email address, you should already know that, you are going to need the website address which is usually in the form of http:\\mydomainname in this case we are using creativeworks.com, you are going to need the connection type that is going to be FTP, SFTP or through local network. You are going to need to know the login name that is going to get you in to the server, you are going to need the password associated with that login name and you are going to need to know the path or the directory on that web server where your website is held. And once you have all these information on your hand you are ready to go on to the next step, from where I am going to show you how to connect to your website. ]
