Planning the Application / Site Map and Application Flowchart
Subtitles of the Movie
A site map is a diagram of all the components of a site. Site maps are one of the most important pieces of documentation for both a site and an application. But for some reason are frequently over looked. They should be updated whenever a change is made which can be cumbersome but will save time at some point in the future. The site map for Q3 studios will help us decide where the navigation for the "Where's Tom" application will be placed. The site map for the Q3 studios site is simple since this site has only a few sections. I've already put in the Home page which is the starting page for the site. I'll add the Clients page, the Services page and the About Q3 page. I'll add the connectors, the Contact Q3 link on the web site is actually just a mailto link. So I won't add a page here. Now we need to make a decision. Where should we put the "Where's Tom" application on the site? We're not talking about the directories or the files themselves. We'll talk about that decision when we look at development methodologies and structures. In this site map we want to know how the user will access the application within the navigation of our site. Since this application is not an example of a client, although it was written for a client it won't fit in the client section. It's not related to the description of Q3 studios, and it's not involved in contacting Q3 studios. That leaves the services area. So we'll put "Where's Tom" as an application in the services area. We'll probably also add a link to it on the front page. But the application itself can be considered to live in the services area. Many site maps distinguish between static pages and dynamic pages, Although the way they are distinguished varies greatly. For our site map, we'll indicate this application as a page in a different color. The application itself has two sections. So we'll indicate the public area, and the administrative area of the application. Normally you'd most likely be writing an application like this for a site that would already have a general administrative area. In that case you'd just add the "Where's Tom" admin functionality to the existing admin area. Now we have a simple but effective site map of the Q3 studios site that tells us where the "Where's Tom" application will be found on the site. map of the Q3 studios site that tells us where the "Where's Tom" application will be found on the site.
