Introduction / System Requirements: Local or Remote

Subtitles of the Movie

After you decide to build a web site or application, the next step is to decide whether to work locally or remotely. Developing locally means that you write and save your files to your local computer. In order to view your files as web pages you must have a web server running on your system. Virtually all higher level operating systems either come with the web server or can use an installed web server. Windows NT, Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro all come with Microsoft's web server, Internet Information Services or IIS. IIS is not automatically installed when you install these operating systems. Be sure to check it as an option to be included in the installation. With Cold Fusion MX Macromedia included a version of Microsoft's Personal Web Server, A simple strip down web server. If you don't have another web server, you can use Personal Web Server to view your pages locally. There have been some glitches with PWS on newer versions of Windows. So, if you can use IIS or another full featured web server you'll be better off. Since Cold Fusion is an application server, you also need a version of Cold Fusion running on your system, if you want to develop locally. Rather than requiring developers to purchase a full version of Cold Fusion for developing applications, Macromedia realized that it'd be to their advantage to give developers more lee way. So they created the developer edition of Cold Fusion server. The developer edition is free and can be accessed by one IP address only. To get the developer edition, download the newest evaluation version of Cold Fusion server. No serial number is required for the evaluation version and in 30 days it automatically converts to a developer edition. Because it only allows access from one IP address, the developer edition can't be used in production. When you work locally your files are saved and stored on your local hard drive. You view your files as web pages by opening a browser window and typing http://localhost and then your site name which in our case is wherestom. If you were using Cold Fusion's Personal Web Server, you will need to add the port number to the end of the domain. The port number is 8500. If you are having trouble browsing files using localhost as the domain name, you can also use 127.0.0.1 which is generally the IP address assigned to your local server. If you decide to work remotely, if you don't have access to a web server, or if you want to store your site files in a central location your remote server must also be running a web server and Cold Fusion. Many ISP's now offer Cold Fusion as an option for web site hosting. So finding a site location is not usually difficult. Working remotely means that you make changes to your files on the server where they live. Most development tools allow this functionality, some with better features than others. DreamWeaver for example allows you to create what it calls FTP or RDS sites. When you put in your FTP information, you can view the contents of the site directories in the site panel. You open files and make changes directly to the file on a remote server. So that when you save it the change happens immediately. You don't have to copy up files to make the changes live on your site. This can have its drawbacks. So obviously if you are making changes to a live site, be sure you know that what you are doing won't cause an error. Finally you can work locally and test remotely. This is also for a situation where you don't have a web server or Cold Fusion server running locally. But you don't want to work on live site files. When you work locally and test remotely you save your files to your local hard drive and then FTP them up to the remote site for viewing. DreamWeaver has excellent site management tools for working locally and testing remotely.
