Installation and Setup / Dreamweaver MX 2004 for Development

Subtitles of the Movie

Using Dreamweaver MX 2004 as a development environment can be quite a switch for experienced developers but it's well worth a transition. Many of the best features of HomeSite were added to the MX version of Dreamweaver and in the 2004 version several others were brought in. The result is a fast versatile tool for web programming. The most noticeable improvement in Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the speed. Files load and save about twice as fast as in the MX version. Macromedia completely rewrote the file management engine. So those waits of up to 5 seconds for a single page to save are a thing of the past. In addition Dreamweaver MX 2004 now allows you to work on files without requiring that you create a site. While creating a site is still preferred because it provides you with much more information, Macromedia recognized that many developers don't need the complexity of full site set up. You can open any file, work on it and save it without being required to create a site. Two features of HomeSite that many developers used extensively are code snippets and code templates. Code snippets are small sets of code that you use frequently, saved as a snippet that can be dragged into a new page instead of retyping every time you need it. Code templates are similar but generally shorter blocks of code and they were inserted with keyboard commands which makes them particularly handy. In Dreamweaver MX 2004 code templates and snippets can now be used with keyboard shortcuts. Getting used to the power and flexibility of keyboard shortcuts will take some time but it's worth it. We'll create a piece of code we use frequently, a comment block and assign it to a free key. First we'll create the snippet. Fortunately this is a common one, so Dreamweaver already has a version of comments we can work with. In the code panel, click the snippets tab. Then find the item called comments and click the plus sign if it is not already clicked. We'll modify the comment single line snippet to be Cold Fusion comments rather than HTML and add our name. Right click the snippet and select edit. In the dialog box have the description say "CFML comments with name" and choose insert block. Then add one dash to each comment, start and end, and insert your name in the middle. The preview type stays code and then we're done. It's usually a good idea to drag the snippet on to a page when we're done just to make sure it's right. This looks good, so we'll create our keyboard shortcut for it. Keyboard shortcuts are accessed from the edit menu. Click on keyboard shortcuts and wait a few seconds for the information to load. Then select the set of shortcuts you would like to edit. If this is the first change to shortcuts you've made, you'll see the default selected. You can't change the default set. So click on the duplicate set icon, name the set so that you can tell it is not the default. This new set will become the default set and load automatically when you start Dreamweaver. Select snippets from the commands menu. Then select the plus sign next to the comments inside the window and select comment single line. As soon as you click the plus sign next to the shortcuts, any key that you type will be added to the line below the shortcut window So you should know ahead of time which key combination you want. A keyboard shortcut with a number or letter must include the Control key. So be sure to press that first if you want to use the letter L for example. I'm going to set this snippet to the Function key F12 since I rarely use this key to preview in a browser and I constantly use the single line comment snippet. Press the plus sign, and then press the key or a combination of keys that you want to use. In my case I'm seeing a warning because that key is already assigned and Dreamweaver wants to make sure I really want to make the change. I do, so I click the change button, hit OK and I'm done. Now we can return to our page, click the F12 button and we've instantly got our Cold Fusion comments. e. I do, so I click the change button, hit OK and I'm done.
