Installation and Setup / Dreamweaver MX 2004 for Design
Subtitles of the Movie
Dreamweaver's design features have always been good and they have improved dramatically with the 2004 version. With the addition of impressive integrated style sheet support, Dreamweaver can't be beat. Now you can easily create web sites that feature 16 different bright colors, 8 fonts, Lots of blinking cursors, pop-up windows and several fantastic animations. OK may be that's not really a good thing. Any way designing a dynamic site is very easy in Dreamweaver. Dynamic sites can be a particular challenge for what you see is what you get development tools because much of what makes the site work has to go through the application server. Server-Side Includes can be a particular issue since your page won't look right and that's all the HTML is present. And the HTML isn't present if it is not built by the application server. If you can work locally, Dreamweaver resolves much of this difficulty. Server-Side Includes will be retrieved and displayed in the design view just as if they were part of the file you are working with. To easily include a file, select Insert, HTML, Script Objects and Server-Side Include. Then select the file. Dreamweaver will automatically figure the relative path for the file. One drawback to keep in mind with this however, is that even locally Dreamweaver doesn't currently recognize Cold Fusion mappings for file locations. So if you include your files using the cf root mapping of a single forward slash, Dreamweaver won't know how to find the file and it won't display the file contents. If you don't use the root mapping though, then your files can be called from multiple directories, your server side includes may not work properly when they are live. For our purposes we'll use a little work around by leaving the relative paths in place until we're finished with everything we're doing and then changing them to the Cold Fusion root mapping just before we make the application live. When you are designing a site, you'll probably spend most of your time in the design view. This allows you to click to add virtually any item to your page. And view it exactly as it would appear in the browser while you are working on it. A new feature added to Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the table layout information which tells you exactly the size of your table =and allows several different actions with just a right mouse click. I designed the "Where's Tom" application using layers and absolute positioning just for a chance to try it out. This isn't usually a good idea for a live web sites because while acceptance of CSS is now almost total among browsers the way each browser interprets CSS styles can vary widely. For an internal application like this though, it's acceptable. Another feature that is extremely helpful when designing dynamic sites is live data view. This allows you to actually see the way your page would look. If for example a user clicked on a detail link and data was retrieved from the database, To set this up, we'll open user_display.cfm and tell Dreamweaver which variable it needs to locate the data for this page. We double clicked on user display in the file list to open it and now we'll select a view and live data settings. In the URL request backs we'll click the plus sign and type in userid. We'll set the value to 1. You can set the value to another value if you prefer but we know we have this user in the database so it'll display properly. We'll click OK. We'll make sure we're looking at the page in design view and then click the live data view icon in the tool bar. An additional tool bar will display. And in several seconds your page will display with the dynamic fields replaced with data. To return to regular design view, click the icon again. The tool bar will disappear and so will the data. amic fields replaced with data. To return to regular design view, click the icon again. The tool bar will disappear and so will the data.
