Installation and Setup / Development Environments
Subtitles of the Movie
While you can write Cold Fusion code in any text editor. In fact many of us have created entire sites in Notepad. You'll usually find it most helpful to work in a Cold Fusion development environment. A development environment is a software program that provides you with extra help while you're writing your application. The two primary development environments with the most recent version of Cold Fusion are HomeSite and Dreamweaver. Other development tools like Visual Studio.net, GoLive and FrontPage will provide HTML and Server Language editing functions but they don't have robust support for the tag structure in Cold Fusion. HomeSite 5.5 is the newest version of HomeSite, long one of the best HTML editors. HomeSite 5.5 provides all the functionality of the previous versions with several new features including tag in site for Cold Fusion MX tags. HomeSite is a coding environment it is not a visual what you see is what you get environment. If you are comfortable with hand coding HTML and you and don't need to work on the visual aspects of your application, HomeSite is a good choice for your development environment. In fact many seasoned CFML coders prefer HomeSite as a development environment. And if you like you can use HomeSite to accomplish the tasks in this training. For demonstration purposes though, we'll use Dreamweaver MX 2004 as our development environment for this training. We'll stay primarily in the code window although we'll venture into the design side for the final integration of the functionality. We'll set up Dreamweaver for our specific site later in the training. For now we'll just look at some of the features in Dreamweaver MX 2004 particularly the support for style sheets, databases and Cold Fusion components. In Dreamweaver once a site has been defined, quite a bit of supporting information is displayed and available for you to use when you open a file. First, Dreamweaver MX 2004 has significantly improved the way it handles style sheets. CSS style sheets are now integrated into the code and design views of Dreamweaver and it's considerably easier to manage and assign your styles. We can see our style sheets in the design palette, we can highlight an area on the page and right click to assign a style. In the application palette the first tab is the database tab. This allows us to explore and use databases, set up with data sources in Cold Fusion Administrator. I can verify column names and data types and drag and drop column names into my code. With the components tab we can create, edit, view and use components we've built. The components available to a particular file are displayed here. They are displayed within their hierarchy. So I can tell easily which methods are available for each component. I can drag and drop a method into my code for a quick and easy way to add a call to my page. As you expand each method, the arguments for that method are displayed. If you right click on an argument and select get details, you'll see a pop up box with that arguments definition. To see complete information on a component, right click on the component name and select get description. Components are introspective which means that they can get and display information about themselves. And that's what this page is. This component, called user, has three methods or functions that you can use. The first one is called get user detail. The second is search users and the third is validate user. tions that you can use. The first one is called get user detail. The second is search users and the third is validate user.
