Installation and Setup / ColdFusion Administrator and IIS Settings
Subtitles of the Movie
Periodically you may need to check the services manager on your system to confirm that Cold Fusion Server is running, or to stop and restart the service. To verify that the service is running, open the services manager by clicking on the Start button, Control Panel, Administrative tools and then Services. Expand the list of services if it is not already expanded and look for Cold Fusion MX Application Server, If the status is started, Cold Fusion is running. You can stop and restart the Cold Fusion service by clicking the stop restart icon at the top of the page. To allow Internet Information Services to recognize a Cold Fusion template as the first page in our site, We need to add to the list of default documents handled by IIS. A default document is the first file processed by a web server when a directory is accessed. You are always able to type a full address including the file name in your browsers address field and view that page, but saving a default documents allows you to ensure that users coming to your site always go first to your home page. IIS can be accessed by clicking on Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools and Internet Information Services. When you've opened IIS, expand the list and right click on the default web site. Select properties and the documents tab. You'll see several documents listed. If index.cfm is not included in your list, click the add button. Enter index.cfm in the form field and click OK. The normal default page for Cold Fusion is index.cfm. If you would like to use a different document for your default document, just add it to this list. Next select the document we just added, index.cfm and click the upwards arrow until this document is at the top of the list. This will allow IIS to go directly to your default document. IIS starts at the top of this list and continues down until it locates one of these default documents And then it stops and processes that document. Now that we've set up IIS we'll need to change a couple of settings in Cold Fusion Administrator. Open Cold Fusion Administrator by clicking on your Start button, All programs, Macromedia, Macromedia Cold Fusion MX, Administrator. Enter the password that you created when you installed Cold Fusion MX. First it's a good idea to check the mappings. Mappings can be used to point to a particular directory on the site and are useful for managing multiple applications in a site. For example if you have a classified ad application that lives in a directory called XQ39 You can map the phrase classifieds to that directory. Then you can include a file or move to a location with the address www.yoursite.com/classifieds and you would actually be going to the XQ39 directory. Adding a root mapping can also be very helpful. We'll add one because the style of development I use relies on include files that can be called from any sub directory of the site. To add the root mapping type a forward slash in the field called logical path. And then click the browse server button. Travel to the root directory of your site and then click apply. The last step is to click on update mapping. If you don't do this, your mapping won't be created. In Cold Fusion Administrator debugging information is turned off by default because it can expose a lot of information about your site if an error is thrown from your page. Because we are working on a local site, and we're in the middle of development, we are going to turn on form debugging to help us trouble shoot code problems. Select debugging settings in the debugging and logging menu section. Check the box at the top of the page to enable robust exception information and also check the box to enable debugging. There are sample settings under debugging information. The first one is the choice of layout for the debugging information. The classic format is the best choice for most development projects. The dockable format creates a new pop up window with debugging information every time a page is loaded. And that is only useful in limited situations. When we create our application.cfm page, we will use a setting for that application that will allow us to control display of debug output without having to reopen administrator every time we want to change the display. All other administrative settings can be left to default for now. debug output without having to reopen administrator every time we want to change the display. All other administrative settings can be left to default for now.
