Installation and Setup / Installing ColdFusion MX 6.1

Subtitles of the Movie

Installation of Cold Fusion MX 6.1 is generally straight forward. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Cold Fusion, Cold Fusion 6.1 provides a much more robust installation engine that solves some earlier issues with upgrading. If you are installing an upgrade from Cold Fusion 5.0 to Cold Fusion MX 6.1, You'll need to check your existing CFML code for compatibility. The strongest difference between 5.0 and MX is how they each handle attribute validation in tags. In Cold Fusion 5.0, you can have incorrect or invalid attributes in your Cold Fusion tags and nothing would happen. Your page might not have functioned the way you expected but no errors would be thrown. You are able in Cold Fusion 5.0 to set a flag to enforce strict attribute validation. To test your existing code before you upgrade, you can set this flag and then run your site applications. In Cold Fusion MX, strict tag validation is enforced by default. Also SQL statements may return slightly different result sets between Cold Fusion 5.0 and Cold Fusion MX. For example in Cold Fusion MX if a query is referencing a joined set of tables and each table has a field called, for example userid, a select statement will return a blank value for userid until you specify which field you are referencing in your select statement. In Cold Fusion 5.0, the SQL would have returned the first value it found for userid. Small differences like this can make planning the transition critical. It's always best if possible to set up your sites on a testing server and upgrade to Cold Fusion 6.1 outside of a production environment. When you install an upgrade, you will be asked about migrating your existing settings. Because Cold Fusion MX is such a fundamental rewrite of the application engine settings you've made in Cold Fusion administrator will not be transferred unless you specify they should be migrated. Data sources are handled differently in Cold Fusion MX but they are transferred from 5.0 if you request it. If you are upgrading from Cold Fusion MX to Cold Fusion MX 6.1, it is recommended that you completely uninstall CFMX before you install CF6.1. This is so that program can be completely replaced rather than just changed and allows a cleaner and more functional upgrade. A full first time installation is a little more straight forward. Simply enter the information requested by the installation program and you are on your way. Macromedia suggests 512 megabytes of RAM but sets the minimum acceptable RAM to 256 megabytes. You should have 400 megabytes of disk space available on your hard drive. For each operating system there are requirements for the versions that are necessary to run Cold Fusion. Visiting the Macromedia web site for up to date requirements for your operating system is a good idea. Currently Cold Fusion is not supported natively on a Macintosh system. The installation engine will recognize any installed web servers and give you the choice to use an installed server or the MX Personal Web Server. Using Personal Web Server is not recommended unless you have no other options for a web server. When the installation manager asks you for a password for Cold Fusion Administrator, Be sure to make note of the password you entered. It can be challenging to access Cold Fusion administrator if you've forgotten your password. Although, it can be done. When Cold Fusion MX is installed, Macromedia's Java Run Time Environment JRE is also installed. It is recommended that you leave this JRE as installed for best performance. This training is using Cold Fusion MX 6.1 installed on Windows XP Professional running IIS version 5.1 E as installed for best performance.
