Introduction / Exam Topics
Subtitles of the Movie
Now as we get started I want to talk about the Exam Topics that you can expect to encounter when you go take this 70-642 Exam and I've laid out the class in the same type rough outline as what Microsoft has stated on their website as the topics that you can expect encounter, so the way I've divided the course up roughly is we're going to first of all deal with the first section that Microsoft identifies as a possible pool for questions that you're going to see. Now, according to Microsoft's stated Exam Guide and the Skills Preparation List, 24 percent of the questions you should see on the exam will have something to do with configuring IP addressing and services. Now let's say that you get, to make it easy, you get 100-question exam. OK, then maybe 24 of those questions are going to be concerned with IP addressing and services and so what we're going to cover in the course together here are things like TCP IP Basics, Subnetting, Determining the Subnets - there are a couple of videos we're going to do on that, we'll talk about some Variable Links, Subnet Masks, the APIPA Addresses, we'll do a little bit about IP Version 6 addresses and transition technologies and we'll talk about some alternate configuration. Then we'll also talk about the services aspect of TCP IP. We'll talk about some DACP, adding the server roles, some options, classes, exclusions, reservations - all that sort of thing. And then we'll move from there into Name Resolution and since DNS is such an integral part of Active Directory then you can certainly expect to see some questions on DNS and we've got quite a bit of information in the course that we're going to talk about here. We'll talk about DNS, DNS Record Types, Active Directory integration with DNS, DNS replication, forwarding, caching only servers, aging, scavenging, stub zones, all kinds of stuff - global name zones that Microsoft's real proud of and we'll talk about some WINS and Hosts and LM Hosts and that sort of thing. Twenty-two percent of your questions will most likely have to do with Configuring Network Access and that can be a big topic and so we're going to cover some of the things that they normally tend to test on - remote access, network policy servers, authentication choices and things you need to understand about that, the new NAP or the Network Access Protection functionalities that's built in, some Firewall basics and then the new tool that we use for setting up IPSec and Firewall issues and that is the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Tool, so we'll take a look at that as well. Then we'll jump from there into Configuring File and Print Services which they say is and you'll notice how our percentages have dropped considerably here, 13 percent about File and Print Services; we'll talk a little bit about DFS basics, DFS replication, configuring DFS, we'll talk about the Shadow Copy Service, we'll talk about Print Services, a little bit about that, some things to watch for. Then from there we will jump into the Monitoring and Managing aspects and we'll talk about WSUS, the Software Update Services Server. We'll talk about configuring that, some of the new things in the Event Logs, talking about Event Forwarding, Reliability Monitor and so forth and so what I'm going to try to do now and please understand that there are only about 70 million possible questions Microsoft could ask you, so what I'm going to try to do here is concentrate on the major topics that they have historically covered. Now understand, I am not giving you test questions. I'm not pointing you. I'm just simply trying to help you with the basics because what you're going to see if this is your first Microsoft exam, or even if it's your 100th Microsoft exam, they're never going to just ask you directly hey, what does this mean, what is this, can you choose one of these out of the list. They're going to ask you questions that mean that you have to understand aspects of TCP IP subnetting to be able to understand a question about another name resolution problem. So you have to fully understand the topic and how they intertwine with other topics. So what I'm going to try to give you here are the basics of these various technologies, how they work in the Server 2008 environment so that you will understand then how it works, how it should work, what you can expect and on every one of these topics I can express strongly enough and I'll say it a million times in the course, go read more in-depth on these topics, either in a Microsoft Press book or a real good third party book and best yet out in TechNet, if you're learning style works well with TechNet. So that's where we're headed here. Those are the Exam Topics that you can expect to see as stated by Microsoft. Now these percentages will slide around some on various exams, so again, I'm not promising this, but this is their stated percentages and so use this as a guide. For example, if you're not very comfortable with Name Resolution technologies then I would strongly suggest you start reading everything you can get your hands on, TechNet, maybe even a Microsoft Press book and just start learning as much as you can. I'm going to show you some things in the movies here and hands on that you can do. You'll have to gauge yourself as far as how much hands on and how much knowledge you actually have in each one of these areas and you'll probably have to augment it a little bit with more outside reading and you simply cannot get too much hands on before you go take one of these exams, OK? So, that's where we're headed. Let's jump right into it.
