Microsoft MCTS (Exam 70-642) Tutorials

Introduction / Course Overview

Subtitles of the Movie

Well, let's get started here with just a brief course overview so that you can kind of get a little acclimated as to where we're headed. Now the way I've set this course up and the way I've organized it is. I went out to Microsoft's site and I got their Skills List for the things that they're going to test and I went through that and I compiled it, tried to organize it a little better than what they had and I compiled it into a number of main areas here for the Course and we just kind of drill into each one, OK? Now, one of the things you need to know is that the skill set that they're going to be questioning you on is not necessarily all inclusive and you won't necessarily see questions on all of those things and so I've tried to kind of bend the way that I cover the topics based on what's been going on with this test historically and the things that tend to gotchas on the exam for people, OK? So understand as we get started here and I'm going to mention this again at the end, you will need more information than just what you get here to pass this exam. You will have to get hands-on and you will have to get out on Microsoft's site and do some reading, or go to some books, but I will help you through that as we go through here. First of all we'll open up and I'll talk about what we're actually headed toward here, this 70-642 Exam will get you the Technology Services Certification, an MCTS and we're using this one to add to other technology service exams to get you to an MCITP and there's a separate sister course out there at VTC, it's a QuickStart!!, it's much shorter, about Microsoft Certifications. You may want to go take a look at that if you're not familiar. It also goes into detail there about how to take these tests, how to prepare for them and some tricks while you're taking them to help you pass them. Now, I start off talking about, we're going to go through what Microsoft calls Configuring IP Addressing and Services and we're going to concentrate on IP Addressing and we're going to hit such topics as Basic TCP IP; subnetting, because there will be some of that on the exam; the API PA Addresses; TCP IP Configuration; there's just a little bit about IP Version 6 because it's starting to ooze into our lives; we'll talk about Alternate Configurations; then we'll move into another topic area: IP Addressing and Services but concentrating on DHCP, Dynamic Host Control Protocol. We'll talk about adding the server role, some options, classes, exclusions, reservations, relay agents, that sort of thing. Then from there we will jump over to IP Security and we'll talk about some of the IP Security things. We'll also talk about some IP Routing, some basic routing stuff, routing protocols that you need to be aware of for the exam. Then we will go take a look at some DNS stuff, everybody loves DNS, right? So, we'll talk about some Name Resolution basics, DNS in particular; Active Directory integration with DNS; DNS forwarding, caching only, server stub zones, aging, scavenging, DNS and WINS, global name zone - just a lot of all kinds of DNS stuff that they will ask you about on the exam so we'll get you ready for that. Then we'll take a look at Network Access and by that we're talking about remote access, network policy servers, network access protection that Microsoft's really proud about that you're going to get questions on. Some Firewall basics, the new Firewall and Advanced Security Tools and so anyway we'll see that and play with that. Then we will dig into File and Print Services and we'll get into DFS, whether you're using DFS or not, Microsoft's proud of it and they'll ask you questions about it on the exam. Do just a little bit of stuff on the Volume Shadow Copy Services and then some basic Print Services. Then we'll close out talking about Monitoring and Managing a Network Infrastructure with a couple of new tools that show up and then we'll just kind of close the course out. A lot of information here. We're going to go quite a few hours and dig in, get you some hands-on, but I want to warn you, you're going to hear me say a couple of million times in here. I'm going to show you some basics, show you some of the gotcha areas, show you some things that you need to fundamentally understand the right way to be able to figure out the correct answers on this exam, but I will be directing you out to TechNet and to some other resources to read, OK, so when you finish this course you're probably going to be about maybe halfway there. I just want to give you that little warning. It's not like you're going to take this course and go schedule an exam this afternoon and pass the test. These tests just require a lot of hands on and a lot of integrated knowledge about how all the pieces fit together, OK? So, let's just take off. We will jump into the course and just start working our way through step by step and get you going, OK?
