Configuring IP Addressing & Services - Addressing / IPv6 Address Types
Subtitles of the Movie
Now there are three IPv6 Address types and you need to know these for the exam so that you can understand what they're talking about on a couple of the questions, okay, so let's just go through these kind of quickly here; it won't take long. First of all there's a Global Address in IPv6 and this is the same as what we know as Public IP Addresses right now. These are the ones that will work on the Internet - that's a Global Address. A Link Local Address in IPv6 is similar to our APIPA addresses now, those 169.254 addresses, OK? These are the self-configured non-routable addresses in IPv6. Again, just like those self-configuring things we have now in IPv4. They provide automatic communication on a Local Subnet only. So watch for questions on the exam on both IPv4 and 6 where somebody can connect to things on their network but they can't get outside the network. Well, you might think the problem's a router, something else about network, the switch, or something, but look at that IP address. If it's linked local on IPv6 it means something's not right, you don't have a Global Public Address and then in IPv4, of course, it means that you didn't get one from the DCPC server. Now, a unique Local Address is, in version 6, the same thing as our Private addresses in version 4, the 10.-whatevers and 192.168 and so forth, so those are your Private addresses. So just make sure you know about these. A Global Address is a Public IP address; Linked Local is the very same thing as the APIPA addresses; and then the unique Local Addresses are your Private addresses, just like we use now. So as long as you can keep those straight you can understand what they're talking about on the exam and pick out the correct answer, or this will help give you more clues as to finding that correct answer. So there are your three IPv6 Address Types.
