Configuring IP Addressing & Services - Addressing / TCP/IP Configuration
Subtitles of the Movie
To configure TCP IP there's basically one command you're going to use, but let's talk about some of these things. You may need to manually assign an IP address. We will get into DHCP in-depth a little bit later on in the course, but there are going to be times when you need to manually assign what's called a Static IP Address to a machine. This is one that will never change until you go change it and I'll show you how to do that in just a second here. The next thing I want you to understand is that the IPv4 Loopback Address is 127.0.0.1. Now what that means is if I give a machine this IP address it simply means it always refers back to itself. I'll show you an example of that in just a few minutes with this IPCONFIG command. And then there's the IPCONFIG command itself, which we're going to go out and play with here in just a second. Now, the main thing you're going to use in IPCONFIG is the All switch, the Release switch and the Renew switch and so with that let's just jump out into the Operating System and take a look at IPCONFIG and manually assigning an IP address. OK, from the Desktop there are a couple of billion ways to get there; I'm going to click on Start and I will, I'll click on Network and notice that if I go to Network right here, if I right-click and go to Properties this will get me into Network and notice I can manage Network Connections and this shows me my Local Area Connection and I can right-click and go to Properties. You can go play with the various ways to get here. There's actually a little bit easier one - let me show you that one. Close all these. If I just come right here, right-click on network and go to Properties then Manage Network Connections, I'm right there - right-click and go to Properties. Now notice, TCP IPv4, Internet Protocol version 4, if I click on Properties here I am. Now, I've got two choices. This is telling me that I can get the IP address automatically, that means from a DHCP Server when the machine starts up, or I can use the following IP address and I can just type one in - 192.168.2.35 - and the Subnet Mask it put that in for me. I could go change this if I wanted to, OK? And say that I'm Subnetting, OK, we won't do that. Then the Default gateway and we haven't really talked about that. The Default gateway is where do I go if I can't find anything? What's my gateway out to the rest of the world? The Preferred DNS server, notice this is loopbacked, this is pointing to itself. I could put a server in here and this is our DNS server that I would go to - I just made that up, so if it's your DNS server don't panic and send e-mails. I've not hacked your server. I don't know you're out there - I know you're out there but I don't know your address really. I'm going to put this in there and if I click OK this becomes the IP address for this server and all this information is used. OK, but I could just click, obtain an IP address automatically and that's pretty much done. I'm going to Cancel that. I don't want to save it anyway. OK, so that's how to set up something manually or even go in and change it. Now let's go talk about using IPCONFIG. If I click on Start, go to Run and type CMD and open the Command Prompt you will notice I can type ipconfig, press Enter and it shows me the basic IP configuration for this machine. Here you can see my connection, or you can see some of the fully qualified Domain Name; I'm on Comcast in Tennessee. My IPv6 address we'll talk about later. IPv4 I'm at 10.0.2.15; my Subnet Mask, this tells you what part of this is network ID and what part is host. And my Default Gateway, OK? And that's the basic information, alright? Well, if I do ipconfig/all it gives me a lot more information, OK? It starts right here - let me put it right there and let me make it a little wider so we can, well, it's not going to let me do that here, never mind. Notice it's given me a little bit more information. Here's my Mac address on the machine, the physical address. Is DHCP enabled? Yes. Is Auto Configuration or APIPA? Yes. And here's some more stuff down through here. This is when the lease was obtained on this address - we'll talk about it later - my DHCP Server address - all kinds of information here. So if you want to see even more information this is the way to do it. IPCONFIG/all. Now, I'm going to clear this. Now if I think that there's a problem with my ipconfig I can do release which gives up my IP address and now I don't have one, then I can do ipconfig/renew and it will go out, contact the DHCP server and give me another IP address, OK? And there it is. It has reassigned an IP address. So those are the basic commands that you're going to use and then to test to see if I can connect or hit something else, notice, I can use the ping command, so I can ping say Yahoo.com and there it comes back and notice, it went out, it found Yahoo.com, now I'm getting a timeout, it's a busy part of the day so this doesn't surprise me and I'm coming through a virtual machine, but notice this IP address here: 69.147, so if I want to know if I can reach it by IP address, 147.114.224 and notice I can ping it that way as well. So ping will let me check my TCP IP traffic or my network to see if I can get across it and ipconfig will help me to see what all's going on. One last thing before I let you go in this video, type ipconfig/question mark and it will give you more information than you ever wanted to know about IPCONFIG and notice there are a lot of other things that you can do here and I'll let you go play with these. You might want to look over these before you take the examination but that's pretty much it for IP Configuration. Just go over this, make sure you're comfortable with it, play with this in the real world and you should be able to answer questions on the exam fairly easily.
