Configuring IP Addressing & Services - Addressing / APIPA

Subtitles of the Movie

Now let's talk about A-P-I-P-A or APIPA you might hear it referred to. This is in a separate video because I wanted to bring it to your attention - it will be on the exam and this will be a gimme question for you. Now here's a little motivation for you, you will not make zero on this exam because you're going to get this question right no matter how many others you miss, OK? I don't know how motivating that actually is now that I think about it, but Automatic Private IP Addressing is something that Microsoft has built in and what this is, is that with XP and later that you get a self assigned private IP address. Now what this means is, is that if you turn your machine on and you can't contact the DHCP server, which we will talk about in-depth in some different videos in this course, but if you can't get an IP address to your machine it will automatically configure itself one and this is what you need to watch for. It will be somewhere between 169.254.0.1 and 169.254.255.254. Here's the deal. Watch on the exam, any time you see a machine that's got an IP address of 169.154 you're probably looking at a machine that's not on the entire network. It assigned itself a private IP address because it didn't get a real IP address from a DHCP server and it has not been set up with one manually. So this machine is not on the total network. Now, the point of this was some of this kind of helpful stuff that Microsoft tends to do and that is so that like at home I could set two computers up, turn them on, they both give themselves one of these automatic Private IP addressing addresses and they can communicate with each other. They think they're on the same network - well they are on the same network - they each have a unique IP address and so I can go. I don't have to set up a DCP server, I don't have to do any manual IP configuration - everything's great. This becomes a great troubleshooting tool and watch out for this. There could be any number of questions on the exam about these addresses. They'll show you a problem and you'll notice one of the machines has this 169.254 address that should cause bells and whistles to go off in your little brain to tell you that this guy didn't connect to a DCP server; he's not on the same network as everybody else. Everybody else has got a, you know, a 73.-something address and then this one guy's got a 169.254 - ding, ding, ding, ding, ding - something's wrong with his IP addressing and he's not there, OK? So, watch for this and a number of different ways - 169.254 watch for that on IP addresses on the exam. I think I've said it 27 times now, OK? Just be ready for this on the exam, trust me. You're not going to miss these questions on the exam, right? OK.
