Configuring IP Addressing & Services - Addressing / Variable Length Subnet Masks

Subtitles of the Movie

Variable Link Subnet Masks is a term that you may well see on this exam. VLSMs. This is going to be a real short video, but I want to be honest with you here, when we talk about these things first of all understand that we're going to use 1 subnet mask that we create that's used externally and then we subnet that subnet mask internally, so we have multiple subnets that are used internally on one subnet mask that's used externally. OK. Now are you confused? Here's the deal on Variable Link Subnet Masks - they are very confusing for even experienced people to work with, so here's what I'm going to tell you about VLSMs on this exam. The most you're going to get is maybe one question about these if you get any at all, OK? And I've mentioned in other videos before, I'm not joking or playing games with myself, I don't expect to go in there and make 100 on this exam, so in this instance I'll go ahead and take my 99. If you want to really understand Variable Link Subnet Masks then you need to go out and read them; it's way past the scope of this course and I don't want to waste a bunch of time on them. I want to get you on other stuff that'll really help you on the exam based on the number of questions you're likely to get, so you may get 1 on this. All I'll tell you is, is if you get a question about Variable Link Subnet Masks, play with it for a few minutes; really mark it and come back to it after you've answered everything else and then start counting the Subnets back and forth. These things, they're confusing as everything, but they cannot overlap each other and so what you can do is, is with all your possible answers just look to see which ones overlap and that's not the correct answer, OK, so play with it just a few minutes and once you've spent a certain amount of your time just kill it, make a wild guess and go on and instead of making 100 on the exam you'll make a 99. But I just wanted you to know you will see these on the exam possibly, you won't see but one or two questions at the most and this is an extremely advanced topic for subnetting and TCP IP. You may see this in the real world, but a lot of times this is implemented through routers and all kinds of things so that's when you would really want to dig into it and figure it out, OK? If you'd like, go out to Microsoft's website, get in TechNet, do a search on Variable Link Subnet Masks, and read up about them to get more information. OK? So anyway, that's just a little heads up on the exam but don't waste a bunch of energy learning this because it's not a major part of the exam.
