The Linux Professional Institute has three levels of certification. This course includes the first and second level. The first level is known as the Junior Level; it's also known as LPIC1. It has no prerequisites. To qualify it is necessary to pass Exams 101 and 102. To pass these exams it will be necessary to understand how the command line works. You'll need to know how to perform simple operations like add users; backup; restore files from backups; shut down; and reboot. You will need to understand the basics of installation, including X, local networking, and setting up a modem connection to the Internet. That's the first level. This course is also about the second level of certification, which is the Advanced Level. It's also known as LPIC2. It has one prerequisite: you need to have an LPIC1 certificate. If you don't, you will need to pass the LPIC1 Exams before you can be issued an LPIC2 certificate. You can take all the exams at the same time if you wish. To qualify for the Second Level, it is necessary to pass 201 and 202. Briefly, the items on the exams are the things you need to know to administer a small-to medium-sized network of systems. You will need to know the tasks necessary to administer a mixed site with both Linux and Microsoft systems; in particular, the configuration and operation of a Samba server. You'll be required to understand the operation and configuration of gateway systems and their various functions; this includes Linux acting as a server. There is also a third level of certification. It's a little different than the first two. This course does not cover the third level. It's called the Senior Level; it's also known as LPIC3, and it has prerequisites. You must pass all of the exams required for an LPIC1 and LPIC2 certificate. The exams for LPIC3 are a little different. Exam 301 is required. It's known as the Core Exam. The other exams, 302 through 306, cover specializations. You pick one. You can get more information on the test and on the meaning of the certification at the LPI Web site.
