Getting Started / Preferences

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's talks in depth about the preferences, starting off with the preferences at the top here. The first preference is 'Show theme selection dialog when creating new documents.' If we have this unchecked like I do, that means the moment that you start Keynote, the theme dialog box does not appear - and that's why I did it. Now - 'Using smart quotes'. If you use a left quote, it will automatically create the right quote for you, without you having to do it, and that's what smart quotes is. The next one down the line is 'Check spelling when you type.' What happens is, when you make a boo-boo or typo or spelling error, it will put an underline underneath the word that you misspelled, letting you know that you made a mistake. So that's very good to have as well. 'Show size and position when moving objects.' What happens is, when you move an object, you will see a little dialog appear, and this will show the X and Y position which is the horizontal axis and vertical axis, and also show the width and height of that object. You also have 'Backup previous version when saving' - you can backup a previous version. I like to use pixels as units, and we can change the colors of our guides - go ahead and play with that if you wish. And this controls the way the guides are. And you want to choose something very bright, something that stands out, something that doesn't interfere with the way you work. So, we also have pixels as a measurement. 'Place origin at the center of the ruler.' As you're moving an object, it will place an origin at the center of the ruler. Now, you also have 'Show guides at object center', which shows the guides at the object center which you're moving the object around. 'Show guides at object edges'. I suggest having these two checked off for alignment and distribution. 'Scale slides up to fit monitor'. This scales certain slides to fit your monitor, as you're actually presenting. 'Exit presentation after the last slide'. 'Present on primary display' or secondary display - you can actually have two monitors displaying your Keynote presentation. Then the last one we have - 'Use alternate display when viewing slide notes'. If you have two displays, you can use a second display to view your slide notes. So while your doing your presentation, you have your notes handy that you can read. It's like a cheat sheet or a teleprompter so to speak, but it doesn't move. And then, we have display preferences. :52.0] And then, we have display preferences.
