In this movie let's talk about what Joomla! can do for you. Joomla! is an excellent choice for a website application and a content-management system. It can do many things for you, your business or your company. First and foremost, Joomla! is great because it's free. Saves you lots of money there. You could try it out and it doesn't cost you a dime. Joomla! will allow you to create a business website, whether it's internal or external. Some people want a business website only internally within their employees and staff so you can do that if you need it. Or you can make it external and put it out there for the public to use. Joomla! is great for a family website. You can share information with family members, share pictures, videos. Joomla!'s awesome for e-commerce. If you want to sell things online you can do that with Joomla!. If you want to share online book snippets or magazine articles, something you can do also online. If you get some good information out there, you'll get users who want to keep returning to your website to read your information. Then that information, they can see, you know, what the latest item is or what the most popular item is to read. Joomla!'s a great idea for non-profit sites. A lot of people make websites for free for non-profits so here's an easy way to do it and then those non-profit people can actually update their own site. That leads me to another element. Joomla!'s great because other people can update the site. For example, I'm looking at the front page of our Joomla! site here. If I log in as a publisher, if I set up an account called publisher, that'll log me in and then what I can do is click this little icon here and edit any of the articles that I would like to and go in there and work on that, add to, delete. I can also, on the back side of Joomla!, utilize the User Manager and that's where I can add different users and have them do different things. Here's that publisher and here's the super administrator. That's the person who creates the site. But at any time on the back-end I can go in there and add somebody on the front, public end or I can put people on the back-end; very easy to do. Now, another element of Joomla! that I think is great for you is that the program does not require you to understand coding or all the nitty gritty of PHP and MySQL. Joomla! just provides us with these components and extensions that automatically will set these things up for us. For example, right here we can add contacts, we can add news feeds, we can add polls, weblinks. It has extensions for templates and different plugins and modules; makes it so easy for us to do. If I want to make a poll and see what people are thinking about a certain item, I've got one right here. I can see how many votes it's had. I can make a brand-new poll. It's really easy and I don't have to know the coding to make those answers for the poll go into MySQL. It automatically will work for me. And mentioning those templates here, there's lots and lots of free templates online so take advantage of those. Just do a quick Google search for Free Templates for Joomla! and you'll get lots of them. Another great element for Joomla! is that it's very customizable. Let me log out here as a publisher. At the top here you see the logo. You can easily change that to fit whatever color scheme you need, fit the business or the company that you're designing for. The website also is great for today's social networking area. You want to see, you know, who's online. We want to be able to give polls and read what other people are looking at so it's a great idea. It allows that interaction. Joomla! also keeps statistics for us. It'll tell us which pages are the most popular, what are the hits. For example, I can go over here, go back to the Control Panel and let's take a look at the Article Manager. Right there are all the articles that over here you can see how many hits each of those articles have. Joomla! will also let you make money on your website if you want to add advertisements, for example, like the one down here. Alls you got to do is sell those spots. Basically just make yourself a plan. Decide what size of ad you're willing to sell people, where it's going to be, if it's on the front page or a popular page you're going to charge more. You tell them how long it'll run, whether it's for a month or two weeks and then you give them a price; very easy to do. Joomla! also will make navigation very easy for you. All of these menus and different items on here can automatically be created. You can tell it what you want in the main menu, what you want on the top menu. So definitely take advantage of that. And one more thing. Joomla! does great with filtering and archiving articles. If you look up here, we're still in the Article Manager. I can unarchive things, archive them. Having a history is always good for articles. That way you can look thing up, see what was popular, see what has been posted. You can see, like, in different categories and sections of your website to see if certain dates had more articles or maybe you need to delete a category completely because people don't utilize that anymore. So overall, Joomla! is just a great program that's going to help you in many, many ways. So in the next movie we'll continue on learning and actually download Joomla! and get started with it.
