Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie let's talk about getting help with Joomla!. It's very easy and simple to find answers to your questions so what we do is go back to the administrative side, remember it's called the back end of Joomla! and look for the Help menu, right there is our little life saver and we automatically get an index of items, it also can tell us lots of information here, talks about those mambots that we talked about earlier, what you can simply do is read through those items that you need help with or say you're going to start with a poll and you've never made a poll before so you want to read your introductory information, you can just search for that, click on one of those links and you automatically get all of the information you need. What's nice is you can convert this to a PDF, you can print it off immediately, or even e-mail it to yourself to refer to later maybe when you have time to work on it. The next item for help of course is the glossary, you can go down through here, here's a lot of those key terms that we talked about, if you run across something in Joomla! and you're like what is that, go to the glossary and just look it up really quick, it will be there. Of course they've got credit links, support information, here's a great place. You can go to the Joomla! website from here, Joomla! news, the forum is excellent, I'm going to click on that, you'll notice it opens in a new tab for me or a new window, right here I can go look at the different elements and the different places to talk to people, I need help on the administrative side, I can click that on the forum and go in here and take a look at what people have posted, search, and then you know if my information that I need is not in there I can post something and hopefully get some help really quickly and easily, forums are a great way to meet people and help each other when you have issues. There's a help site, you've got manuals, tutorials, anything you're working on go look it up and see if it's got a tutorial, the documentation site, of course you've got a network here, extensions, take a look at all of the amazing extensions that people are building to add to your Joomla! sites. You can look at them, you can read about them, see what other people have done, you can go search online to see what people think of a certain map or a slideshow that they've added to their Joomla! site. And you can check out the bugs or Joomla! forge, there's all kinds of stuff here, downloads and patches, et cetera. Lots and lots of good information just in this support item right here. What's nice is it's all concise right here you don't have to go out and search for it and find it, it kind of lists it out and tells you what those different areas are. We've got our licensing information if you need information on that, the documentation for Joomla!, again if you've never done it before, go there, read some of their Quick Start guides and information like that. The change log of the different changes that have occurred and of course your latest version check, you've got all of that information in the history there. Now one of the things you can do is get help within a specific item you're working on, you don't have to go to this specific help area, if I am in the Category Manager which I just clicked on right here you can tell that's where I'm at, I can click the help button within there and it will automatically bring me up the items for where I'm at, as you can see it tells me all of that information there. And then it will give me quick tips down here at the bottom plus it will give me related information, maybe this was close to what I needed but not quite there, typically this related information will take you where you need to go. Now if you do get stuck and you're not finding your information here I always suggest go out, use a search engine and just type in your exact issue, if it's an error message type in the error message and then simply do a quick search. The other thing you need to know about doing searches let me go into a quick search engine here, an error message put all the words together in quotes. That will keep those words together when you do a search. If you need to add in something else you can Plus Joomla! so that they make sure it uses the Joomla! software plus that error message in quotations. You'll get better hits for the item that you're looking for if you do it in quotes and do the plus sign for things you also need. Now if you do the search and you get a bunch of stuff you don't need, you can always do the Minus sign and subtract out any item that you don't want so you put the minus and then the thing that keeps coming up that you don't want, put that in there. Now if all else fails just go to joomla.org start looking through their information and post it in the forum if you can't find what you need. So there's lots of help out there, make sure that you also provide help on your Joomla! website for your users if they have questions make sure they can contact someone easily, add a forum to your site if that fits, add some frequently asked questions to help people, maybe offer a live chat so if somebody's on it they can automatically and quickly get help. So take a minute and look around your Joomla! site and make sure that you know where to access all that helpful information.
