Introducing Joomla! / About Joomla!

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie let's talk about Joomla!. Joomla! is a web application so you need a web server to be able to run the program. You have to have the web server so the Internet world can see your site. Joomla! requires MySQL and PHP. Joomla! stores all the content for the site in its database. That database is in MySQL. Joomla! is an open-source content management system for your website. Some might say what the heck does that mean? A content-management system, otherwise known as a CMS, is used for the control and editing of content. Content can be text, images, videos, et cetera. And basically a CMS will allow a variety of users who have been granted the proper permissions the option to edit the content. So on this test site basically all these articles, et cetera, there can be different people adding or editing those articles. Typically administrators can edit content in the background and it displays on the front side for the public users. But you can also have editors or publishers that go through the front side to edit content for the public. The nice thing about Joomla! is you can run it on your own computer. You don't necessarily have to have a web server up front. You can set up your computer as the web server. Later on then you can load your local site onto the remote server for web users to look at. Joomla! allows you to load a site blank or one filled with sample data. This one right here is filled with the sample data. If you've never used Joomla! before, definitely load the sample data. It'll help give you examples that you can look at. This one over here is one that I put together that we're starting to put together that doesn't have the sample data. As you can see, I'm just now starting to get some very basic information in there. So the sample data, if you've never done it before, definitely load it. Joomla! has a front-end and a back-end. The front-end is for your website users and then your very basic publishers and editors of some of your articles. You also have the back-end. This is for your administrators and managers. They edit the content in the database. Now, a Joomla! site has the typical website elements. You've got menus, you've got linking capability, you can search the site. It also has some unique components that are called Modules. You can have different polls. You can see who's online. You can allow people to log in. Those things are really easy to add and you don't have to know a lot of coding in the background to make them work. Now, Joomla! has its own site. It's just Jooma.org. You'll notice there's all types of things you can look at here if you want more information. But you can share ideas, you can contribute things, something maybe like a template when you get good with Joomla!. You can also work with other people or talk to other people in the forum to get ideas or thoughts if you run into some type of situation that for some reason isn't working. Joomla!'s available to anyone anywhere because it's in the open-source community. Joomla! is a program that can be easily utilized once you learn a few basic skills. It's been around for quite a while so there are some amazing things you can do with this program. Joomla! is a WYSIWYG editor, meaning what you see is what you get. And it can do full text searches, it has plugins, search engine optimization and it has a wonderful interface and a really easy-to-use management console. If you wan to learn more, you can use this About Joomla! link. You can scroll down and even take a look at the websites that utilize Joomla!. Looking at other people's sites can really give you some good ideas of what the program can really do. But take some time, look at the joomla.org website and you'll learn a lot about the program and some great ways to meet other people to learn from them also.
