JavaScript Libraries Tutorials

Introduction / Requirements

Subtitles of the Movie

In this tutorial we'll be taking a moment to look at some of the requirements that are necessary to benefit most from this tutorial series. Now, these requirements are somewhat optional. It depends on how much you want to be interactively involved with the different steps throughout all of the projects. So first of all, you will need a text editor. Of course, you could end up using a WYSIWYG html editor if you wanted to. I will be using Dreamweaver CS3 but you can feel free to use any tool that you feel most comfortable with. For many of the available tools that are out there, the community has created extensions and plug-ins to provide support for the JavaScript libraries that are available. It's definitely with a quick Internet search to see if your favorite editor has support for the library you are considering using. The Dreamweaver installation I am using does not have any extensions installed; however, there are a number of them that are available. You will also need an Internet connection. You will need this Internet connection in order to download the most recent versions of the libraries so that you will be able to use them. An Internet connection will also be handy when you need to be referencing the documentation for these libraries if you run into any issues or you want to learn more about a specific topic. It is also recommended that you have a couple of up-to-date browsers to preview your pages in. Actually, the browser doesn't have to be the most up-to-date browser as the JavaScript libraries will take care of most of the browser issues. I just mentioned the need for a browser so you'd be able to see the fruits of your labor as we progress throughout the tutorials. You will be able to complete these tutorials on any operating system as long as you have one that is running a modern browser. As with other web technologies, the libraries are operating system agnostic. It doesn't matter which operating system you're using. The only thing that matters is that you have a web browser. For many of the tutorials we'll be using and manipulating data from external sources as required by the very nature of AJAX. We will need a server-side technology in a database setup in order to use these technologies. I will be using an Apache server running PHP in MySQL and will be showing you my PHP code as well as MySQL databases as needed. We will also be taking a look at how to get a simple server set up so that you'll be able to benefit from these PHP and MySQL snippets. Of course, the details of PHP, MySQL and server administration are well beyond the scope of this tutorial series. If you are interested in finding out more about these topics, check out some of the other tutorial series available through VTC. If you are familiar with a different programming language or database technology, please feel free to use those instead of my provided solutions. With these requirements taken into consideration, we will be able to make the most of our video tutorial series.
