Brief Review / CSS

In this tutorial we discuss the basics of Cascading Style Sheets. If we can consider HTML as the bones of a web page, then Cascading Style Sheets are the skin. Cascading Style Sheets control the display appearance of the content on our page. CSS is able to do this by telling the HTML tags to appear a certain way. Now, of course, the browser is set up to interpret these declarative statements a certain way so it does depend somewhat on the browser understanding what these directives mean. Cascading Style Sheets allow us to create web pages that look good on cell phones, screen and print, as well as control the auditory properties of screen-reading applications. Now, here we have a sample of our Cascading Style Sheets. Here we have some information that's in the head of our document and the first thing you see there is the link and this is how we can link to an external Cascading Style Sheet. Next you see that there's the Style Block and inside of the Style Block we have an import statement. The import statement is going to look for the file. It's here called subsection and it's going to read in all the Cascading Style Sheet properties into the Style Block as if they were actually there to begin with. Then it continues down and it takes a look and says OK, we have three other styles here and it sets those things up. So this style information is in the head. The first line is imported so it's an external document and the first section there with the link, that is also an external file. Now, down below we see that we have an ID of main focus and then inside of the body we have a paragraph that has in-line styling to put a border around this element. We also see where there's an application of a class to the word Fun and so that gives us kind of this overview of how we can have our Cascading Style Sheet information placed into our document. Now, of course, if we're going to be keeping with the principle of modularity, we're going to rely mostly on our links. Only rarely should we have Cascading Style Sheet information directly in-line and so where possible, keep your CSS information in a link. Now, it's also important to keep in mind here that we have some things dealing with Cascading Style Sheets here that are going to be manipulated over and over again with our JavaScript and the most common elements are displayed here. We have these three; text manipulation, elements of the box mode and different layout options. So in each one of these different sections we have essentially the Cascading Style Sheet property that would be manipulated and this needs to be paired up with the specific value and we have a lot of different ways that we can put values into these properties and as before with what I recommended with HTML, I recommend with Cascading Style Sheets because the World-Wide Web Consortium, the W3 or the W3C, they maintain the standards for Cascading Style Sheets. So if you want to learn more about CSS, please visit W3.org to find out a lot of information about that. And that concludes our very brief look at Cascading Style Sheets.
