Wikis Everywhere / Technology Wikis

Subtitles of the Movie

In this section, let's discuss wikis about technology. As wikis are a cutting-edge technology themselves, it's natural that there will be plenty of wikis about technology. Because new technologies are always emerging, a medium like a wiki that can be changed in real time; very appealing. Wikis also allow people to contribute knowledge about the technologies that they have a personal interest in or a grasp of. So if you have an interest or a wealth of knowledge about a particular technology, you can contribute to a wiki about technology and share your interests or your knowledge. Some wikis transcend descriptions and you'll find this as we go along. For example, an open-source tech wiki could also contain sections for advocacy and consumer education. So let's talk about some of my favorite technology wikis; wikis that I feel like really represent the genre. The first one is Ubuntu Team wiki, which I feel is a great example of a up and coming technology site using wikis to really share knowledge and help collaborate and coordinate. So I'm just going to switch over to my browser here and this is the Ubuntu Team wiki. This is the wiki that the team that develops the Ubuntu open-source operating system, they use this to collaborate and discuss ideas and store team-related information. Now, this is the converse of the documentation wiki for Ubuntu users, which is the help wiki. They really utilize wikis in various facets of their organization and you'll notice on the right that they're organizing their resources such as their software developers, quality assurance and packaging, marketing and advocacy, really making great use of the wiki technology to coordinate and collaborate, to do their work more efficiently. And as I scroll down here, you'll see all the wealth of information they've got posted here; quality assurance, marketing advocacy, support and documentation, so a really great use of the wiki technology for an open-source project. The next one is the Missouri State University technology wiki. Now, this is a really neat idea. It's a wiki aimed to educate university students on introductory topics in a university help-desk environment. So I'm just going to switch back to my browser. Now this is a really cool idea for a wiki. Basically it's covering technology topics for the university students at an introductory level so that maybe they won't have to call the help desk so much. And we're seeing areas of interest here such as web browsers, operating system, all in at a very basic level. And they have a topic wish list and short pages and we'll go into things like short pages in different sections. So this is a really good representation of a wiki that covers different technology at different levels. It doesn't have to be all high-level content. This is going to be a great, efficient way for the university help desk to keep their phone lines clean. Finally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology wikis. MIT. Really a forefather of a lot of the emerging technologies that are going on in our world today. They host dozens of wikis. Now, my favorite is the second life at MIT space. So I'm just going to switch back to my browser and show this to you. The MIT Information Services and Technology wiki service is hosing just tons of information on different technologies and again, this is a merging of a technology wiki and an education wiki. So we're just scrolling down through here, checking these out and they're covering different topics from the Java programming language to emerging technologies, space to the iPhone. And again, I encourage you to check this wikis out to see if there are other technology wikis out there that you're interested in and perhaps would like to collaborate.
