Introduction to Wikis Tutorials

Wikis Everywhere / Education Wikis

Subtitles of the Movie

In this segment, let's talk about education wikis. Wikis are a tool with unlimited potential, both within the classroom environment as well as outside of the classroom environment. Educating people who just want to learn. Wikis are an increasingly popular medium for instructors to express themselves and their ideas. Some ideas that have been implemented are the creation and revision of research papers. Using wiki technology to allow peers to review the papers and instructors to track the revision history of the paper. Another idea is using a wiki for a group project. That way the instructor can see who is really contributing. Now, this is a really neat idea. If you think back to your education history, did you ever have a group project, say, where you had three or four people and maybe only two actually did anything and the other two just sat around and watched you do all the work? Say you used a wiki to write a paper, a group paper that involved everybody pitching in to do a particular part. The instructor would use the revision history of the wiki to see who actually contributed and made effort on the paper. Data collection and course surveys can also be done within the wiki technology. An instructor could create sharable or changeable syllabi and lesson plans. Finally, easily accessible course documentation, such as a schedule or a calendar could be updated and stored on a wiki. Now, some really neat education wikis that I wanted to show you, the first is the Brown University wiki and I think it's a great example of a wiki in a university environment and I'm just going to show you that one right now. And you'll see it's got lots of content and it's being used widely throughout the university. Everything from different lab environments to particular classes, they're all using the wiki environment to collaborate and share between their users. You'll see they've even got their soccer team using the wiki. The Science of Spectroscopy wiki. This is a NASA-sponsored project that covers topics from cardiovascular imaging to x-rays. Now, this is a really neat one and I just want to scroll down through here and show you all of the different applications that this wiki covers; decoding DaVinci, Hubble space telescope, this is some really high-level content that's being covered here on this wiki so this goes to show you, this is not just light-weight stuff. People are really getting serious work done using wiki technology. Finally, the TBR, Tennessee Board of Regents e-Learning wiki. This is a collaborative environment joining the Tennessee State colleges and universities in unison to promote e-learning initiatives and I just want to show you real quick one of the things that they're doing with a wiki. This is their CMS Transition Implementation. The Tennessee Board of Regents was transitioning from one content management system, course management system to another and so rather than everybody flapping their arms in the wind, not knowing what to do, they created a wiki to allow everybody to collaborate, share their ideas, share their thoughts and feedbacks on the transition process. So a really great use of wiki technology. This is a medium that's being used widely within the educational environment and if this is of interest to you, I encourage you to check in to it, to do more research. There's a lot of stuff out there for you.
