Wikis Everywhere / Hobby/Entertainment Wikis

In this section, let's talk about hobby and entertainment wikis. Now, this is probably how a lot of people come to find their first wiki. They do a search for something that they're interested in, a hobby or for entertainment value. Dozens, if not hundreds of hobby wikis are out there covering a wide variety of subjects. If you can play it, watch it or listen to it, it probably has a wiki devoted to it. Now, this is a great idea because users that enjoy an art form or creative idea love to talk about it and where better than to collaborate and share their ideas than a wiki. Hobby and entertainment wikis harness the collaborative power of wiki technology to provide their users a medium to contribute ideas, spoilers, little-known information, facts and even original works such as fan fiction. If you have an interest out there, a wiki surely exists for it and if it doesn't, why not start one? There are some really awesome hobby and entertainment wikis out there right now and I just want to tell you about some of my favorites. WoWWiki, the definitive World of Warcraft wiki, Entertainment.Wikia, which is full of lively commentary about film and television, LovetoKnow Recipes, which is a great site that is a collaborative cookbook and WikiKnitting.com, which is a wiki devoted to knitting, which is growing and allowing everybody from new to experienced knitters to get in on the fun. And I'm just going to show you here in my browser some of the things that I find really neat about these sites. The first one I'm going to show you is WoWWiki. Now, this is just a huge site. It is devoted to everything within the World of Warcraft universe. Now, World of Warcraft, if you don't know, is a multi-player, on-line, role-playing game. Millions and millions of users and it has a really rich and interesting environment, especially if you're into role-playing games or you're a gamer. Now, you'll see here on the left, you have a navigation, which takes you to your main page, village pump, Warcraft pump, so on and so forth and those are different concepts we'll talk about in other chapters. But you'll notice here we have 51,679 articles. That's a lot of articles devoted to a game and a huge fan community. So if you're interested in World of Warcraft or a really good, mature wiki, I highly encourage you to check out WoWWiki. It's a great one. The next one is Entertainment.Wikia. This is a part of a group of wikis called the Wikia Group Powered and this one covers everything from entertainment gossip to television, movies, Broadway and comedy. You'll just scroll down through here and you'll see Paris cinema, so on and so forth. If you like film, television, I highly encourage you to check this one out and contribute to it. Lots of stuff you can add to this particular wiki. The next one is one that I really find interesting and fascinating and this is a collaborative cookbook, LovetoKnow Recipes. I personally love to cook and so I found this one really, really neat. The idea of getting to try other people's recipes, it's better than a cookbook in that it's always being updated with new and interesting ideas. Finally, WikiKnitting. Now, this comes back to, I think, the original idea that Ward Cunningham had. He wanted to share patterns. His happened to be software patterns, but this is knitting patterns and I think this is just a great idea. People getting on and collaborating about any subject that they find interesting. There's always going to be somebody out there that's interested in it too, so get on there and check out a wiki and like I said, if there's not one already out there, why don't you create one?
