Wikis Everywhere / Workplace Internal Wikis

Subtitles of the Movie

In this section, let's briefly talk about workplace or internal wikis. Internal wikis are used by organizations to supplement or replace an intranet. So what exactly is an intranet? It is an inside the network Internet. So what does that mean? Well, an intranet typically hosts documents, such as the companies policies and procedures, form for submission to, say, Human Resources or accounting and the news and events that are currently going on in the company. So imagine, if you would, an Internet that is truly collaborative. Human Resources can update its documents when changes need to be made, organizational charts can be updated as they change and evolve without having to run to IT and find a webmaster, have him log in and make the changes for you, something's not right, they go back and change it again and so on and so forth. It's a never-ending cycle. Imagine if you don't have to do that anymore. If you wanted to change a document, you could just login in and change the document. That's the power of a wiki within the workplace. Many corporations are using the power of wikis within an intranet environment to allow their employees who interact with customers to post their experiences and customer feedback, then in turn to better serve them. Some companies that are using wiki technology internally within their workplace are Microsoft, IBM and Ziff Davis. Now, this is really exciting if you're interested in web technology and wiki technology in particular because these are some of the biggest companies out there and if they're utilizing wiki technology, something must be good about it. So Microsoft, for example, uses wikis to store customer ideas. They can then harvest those ideas to create technologies that better suit the needs of their customers. IBM allows employees to save information into a wiki knowledge base, again allowing them to harvest that knowledge to better serve their customers in their environment. Finally, and this is a really exciting one, Ziff Davis, they utilize an internal wiki to speed up software and development, reducing email usage and improving communication within the team. These are some really exciting examples of the things that can be done with wikis within a small or a large business environment.
